About a week ago, Sony failed to renew its trademark for The Last Guardian (http://www NULL.joystiq NULL.com/2012/08/09/sony-abandons-the-last-guardian-trademark-can-get-it-back/). This caused some people to worry about whether or not the game was cancelled. Thankfully, the head of Sony Worldwide Studios, Shuhei Yoshida, debunked those rumors while he was at this year’s Gamescom. According to him, the game is still in production, though Team Ico has hit a few “technical issues”.
“The team is still working on it very hard. There are certain technical issues they’ve been working on. That’s the period of time when the game, looking from the outside, doesn’t seem to be making much progress. But internally there is a lot of work going into creating the title.”
“We had the game playable. At one point we felt that it would be produced for a certain time period. That was the time we prematurely talked about the launch window. But it turned out the technical issues are much harder to solve. So the engineering team had to go back and re-do some of the work they had done.”
He did not give a release date for the game, but he assured that it would still be released for the PS3. I don’t mind the wait. Given how much polish and quality was put into Team Ico’s previous games, I’m sure that The Last Guardian will be really good.
