Square Enix has announced that KINGDOM HEARTS III has shipped 5 million copies worldwide. The game is the first home console entry in the series since KINGDOM HEARTS II released for PlayStation 2 in 2005. KINGDOM HEARTS III is also preceded by numerous other games in the series such as 358/2 Days, Birth by Sleep, and Dream Drop Distance. These games, including the first and second games, were remastered in HD for PlayStation 3 and PlayStation 4. Dream Drop Distance was remastered only for the PlayStation 4 console and 358/2 Days was re-released as a movie compilation with no gameplay.
Square Enix describes the latest entry as follows:
KINGDOM HEARTS III tells the story of the power of friendship as Sora and his friends embark on a perilous adventure. Set in a vast array of Disney and Pixar worlds, KINGDOM HEARTS follows the journey of Sora, a young boy and unknowing heir to a spectacular power. Sora is joined by Donald Duck and Goofy to stop an evil force known as the Heartless from invading and overtaking the universe.
Through the power of friendship, Sora, Donald and Goofy unite with iconic Disney-Pixar characters old and new to overcome tremendous challenges and persevere against the darkness threatening their worlds.
