Episode 06: Gessen Takes the Stage

Welcome back to more Senran Kagura: Peach Beach Splash!

Today we begin the Gessen Arc of Story Mode. What starts off as Yumi wondering why she’s always put in these lewd situations, quickly turns into heart-pounding excitement for the normally calm Yamato Nadeshiko. However, it seems that not all is well as Shiki is hiding something… and Minori finds out.

It’s another water-gun filled episode as the Gessen girls take on the P-1 Grand Prix!

Additional Thoughts and Notes

Gessen, and by extension Yumi, is one of the most divisive parts of Senran Kagura. My own opinion is that while a lot of the complaints are valid, there is a good character there. Like I say in the video, a lot of Yumi’s problems are marketing ones.

Since she’s such a Yamato Nadeshiko she’s extremely popular among Japanese males. Which means they market the hell out of her in stuff like New Wave. Which upsets Western fans since we feel there’s an oversaturation of her. That said, she does have a lot of good character growth and I liked her arc in Estival Versus. Here though…

Sadly, the start of the Gessen Arc is not amazing. It’s a bit slow and compared to Hebijo, it’s not even in the same ballpark. However, we still have the second half of their story to get through. Perhaps it’ll get better. We’ll have to see next time.

I never got the outright hatred towards Yumi. Does she have character flaws? Sure – she’s a bit uppity and self righteous. That’s not the criticism she’s getting though. Her being marketed a lot and having a lot of merch is in no way the fault of the character. That’s like saying Batman is a bad character because DC use him to promote lesser known heroes. From the 4 leaders she’s actually my favourite and as Benny mentioned she’s got quite a lot of development during Shinovi and Estival Versus.

PBS focused more on Shiki in the Gessen Arc, but I think she was a character that needed it. It starts a bit slow, but I think the conflict was a bit more meaningful than Hanzo.

    • Steve Baltimore

I don’t hate Yumi, I hate she gets shoved down my throat. I get she’s popular in Japan, but there are tons of girls that could have a chance to shine if they weren’t constantly pushing Yumi on the fanbase.

She has no right be DLC in Re-Newal either, if she has a story bit there then that’s just complete BS, but that’s just my two cents if you love Yumi that’s great as well.

    • Mr0303

How is she shoved down your throat? In terms of games she gets the spotlight as much as the other leaders. In Esitval Versus the focus was on Gessen and Hebijo, but I think this is fair given that Hanzo and Crimson had 2 games that already established them.

“She has no right be DLC in Re-Newal either” – why? Who has “the right” to be DLC in there? What’s the issue of her having a side story there? I don’t see an issue with additional story content in this remake for the people who already played Burst. If somebody hates her that much they don’t have to play her bit and that’s been true for pretty much all Senran games with side stories.

    • Steve Baltimore

She has no right to be there because if this is a retelling of Burst she wasn’t there. She has no place there, they are only doing that because she is popular. Why not put another girl there or introduce once of the new wave girls that hasn’t gotten be in a game yet? Because Yumi is the chosen one and must be pushed.

This is the problem the fanbase has with her, or least my problem. She gets a card in almost every New Wave set there are tons of girls that do get one card a year. If he is gonna bring more of those girls into the games at some point you gotta chill with most popular one that doesn’t need a push and push the others.

End of the day it doesn’t really matter and the games will just as enjoyable as always, but I get why she gets the hate she does.

    • Mr0303

“She has no right to be there because if this is a retelling of Burst she wasn’t there.” – from what I’ve seen of the DLC she won’t be in the main story but rather it’ll be her own thing. She won’t magically appear and kill Dogen, so I still fail to see what the issue is of her being there.

“Why not put another girl there or introduce once of the new wave girls that hasn’t gotten be in a game yet?” – you answered your own question – “they are only doing that because she is popular”. It makes complete sense to include a popular character rather than a new unknown one. That’s like complaining that Batman is in the main roster in Injustice and not Crazy Quilt.

“This is the problem the fanbase has with her” – if she’s that popular in Japan this means the Western fans have a problem with her. Let’s examine why.

“She gets a card in almost every New Wave set there are tons of girls that do get one card a year.” – so a popular character in Japan gets more cards in a Japanese exclusive game. How does that justify her getting hate in the West?

And again – how is her hate deserved when it is Takaki who chooses to put her in the card packs? Shouldn’t he get the hate? Or the Japanese audience who like her and buy her merch?

    • Steve Baltimore

Again I can see why they do it, but when you slide all the others to push the one that don’t need it that rubs some folks the wrong way.

Be like if all the Neptunia stuff revolved solely around Neptune, they would have the same problem.

    • Mr0303

“Again I can see why they do it, but when you slide all the others to
push the one that don’t need it that rubs some folks the wrong way.” – since you didn’t address the questions that I raised above, let me summarise. Her presence in the Western games has been pretty balanced and yet it’s the Western audience that unjustifiably hates her because of her apparent over representation in Japan, where she’s popular. How is that good reasoning to hate the character?

Using the Neptunia comparison would you accept if Nepgear got hate because she’s popular and appeared in 4 Goddesses instead of a character who didn’t have her spotlight or somebody new that would fit in the new setting?

    • Steve Baltimore

I don’t hate her as a character, I think she is shallow character but I don’t hate her. I think most just think there is simply too much of her and not enough of the others, and you make a good point the game is Japan only and it makes perfect sense for that to happen. That series has spread worldwide now and if they really want to bring in the other new wave girls that needs to be prefaced. Most People had no idea who Yuyaki, Souji, and Ayamani were where they came from. New Wave introduces Western fans to these girls even if is not localized here.

If all the hate is justified is a matter of opinion, while I don’t like she takes spots from others I think they take it too far.

Nepgear gets a lot of hate for no reason as well I never quite understood what the fan base’s problem was with her. Their reason is alot of what say about Yumi she’s too plain and boring and yada yada, I don’t really have an issue with that personally. I think she will always get included when they put the sisters in a game cause they’ve never put one in without the rest of them.

    • Mr0303

I didn’t say that you hate her. I asked if the hatred towards her is justified. You said you understand it. I don’t given the facts that I laid out.

From what I’ve seen Takaki and XSEED have been considerate of Western audiences. There was a vote for choosing who would be on the daki in Estival Versus’ collector’s edition and Kasturagi and Hikage won. It wasn’t a default Yumi.

“Nepgear gets a lot of hate for no reason as well I never quite understood what the fan base’s problem was with her.” – that’s my point exactly. Yumi is one of the 4 leaders and an extremely popular character. Seeing her in games and merch should be a matter of fact and not a reason to hate her. Going back to my previous example would anyone rage that there’s a lot of Batman games/merch in stores?

    • Steve Baltimore

but when you feel every other character is being pushed aside for her people will start to dislike her, justified or not.

I get what your saying, but again if you don’t ever let the other characters shine there’s no point to having them.

    • Mr0303

“but you feel every other character is being pushed aside for her people will start to dislike her, justified or not.” – I don’t care about feelings, I care about facts. Given that the other characters are not pushed aside it’s ludicrous to dislike her because of that.

“I get what your saying, but again if you don’t ever let the other characters shine there’s no point to having them.” – and I’ll ask again – how are other characters not given the chance to shine? Let’s look at the latest game in the series – PBS. Last time I checked there were around 30 playable characters including 3 of the New Wave girls. Yumi didn’t have a special role in the story, all the support characters were related to Hanzo and Hebijo and she didn’t even have her own side story. Fun fact – you could platinum the game without ever playing once as Yumi. Doesn’t seem that she’s being shoved down our throats like you initially suggested.

    • Steve Baltimore

I think she is personally, like she gets to be DLC for Re_Newal and no one else is a fine example of it. She shouldn’t be there to being with but if they are gonna do it like I said pick a character that hasn’t been shown off yet. Its things like that make people feel this way. Like I said in the end it will be fine either way, but I do understand why some folks feel the way they do about her. Especially if you play or follow New Wave I can really understand it. Last year they did a poster card each month she got about 9 out of the 12. Tons of girls in that game to show off and she gets by far the most.

I think the hate is blown out of sorts, but i can see why some would be pissed.

    • Mr0303

“I think she is personally, like she gets to be DLC for Re_Newal and no
one else is a fine example of it. She shouldn’t be there to being with
but if they are gonna do it like I said pick a character that hasn’t
been shown off yet.” – for one thing the game is not even out yet so there may be DLC for other characters, so that is in no way a justification for the hatred she’s getting. Can we have an example from something that’s already out in the West please? Also her being there as a bonus is not pushing aside other characters. They could’ve not included her and simply had Hanzo and Crimson. Would this be better? Or maybe including a Miyabi feeding simulator would be a better choice? Including a less popular character definitely makes sense – somebody should send the memo to Hollywood that they should stop hiring Robert Downey Jr and instead put John Smith from across the block, I’m sure that won’t affect who goes to the cinema to see the movie.

“Its things like that make people feel this way. Like I said in the end
it will be fine either way, but I do understand why some folks feel the
way they do about her.” – double feelings with no facts. 😛

“Especially if you play or follow New Wave I can really understand it.
Last year they did a poster card each month she got about 9 out of the
      12. Tons of girls in that game to show off and she gets by far the most.” – and again New Wave is exclusive to Japan, where she’s extremely popular. Would a Japanese person be justified if he bitched that Batman is really popular in the West, when he wanted to see Katana?

“i can see why some would be pissed.” – I don’t and so far you haven’t given me a single reason why this would be justified in any way.

    • Steve Baltimore

That’s your opinion roll with it, I just telling how a lot of folks I know feel.

    • Mr0303

Very little of what I said is my personal opinion. I laid out quite a few facts regarding the issue and didn’t just say “I think Yumi is getting unjustified hate cuz she’s awesome”.

“I just telling how a lot of folks I know feel.” – next time you meet them, do tell them that they are wrong to feel this way. Point them to the above facts if you must.

    • Steve Baltimore

Your never wrong in your feeling cause they are yours lol You can disagree with them and they not make logical sense but they are never wrong.

    • Mr0303

OK then. So if I feel that the Bogeyman lives in my cup of tea then I can’t possibly be wrong and I should start a hate campaign against tea. Got it.

    • Steve Baltimore

haha hell he might how much have you smoked 😛 All I’m saying is everyone will have different views on things like this and I’m not sure if there is a right or wrong, but I thinks its great we can discuss it. The discussion always moves things forward even if folks don’t see eye to eye.

    • Mr0303

“haha hell he might how much have you smoked :P” – har, har.

“All I’m saying is everyone will have different views on things like this and I’m not sure if there is a right or wrong” – I on the other hand am sure, since we’re not talking about personal preference, but rather objective facts about presence, localisation and popularity.

“I thinks its great we can discuss it. The discussion always moves things forward even if folks don’t see eye to eye.” – we can agree on that. I see this discussion as a perfect application of the Socratic method.

    • Steve Baltimore

I just can’t wait till we get more games. I hope the switch games at least get an Asian release, and Re-Newal looks amazing. I hope they do Deep Crimson after this it’s my favorite in the series 😀
