Previous Winners
2012: Vaas Montenegro (Far Cry 3)
2013: The Black Samurai/Lilith (Shin Megami Tensei IV)
2014: Monokuma (Dangangonpa: Trigger Happy Havoc)
2015: Nyarlathotep (Eiyuu Senki)

It’s time once again for us to discover the baddest of the baddies. With so many great villains in gaming this year, it became increasingly difficult to narrow it down to just five. Somehow, we managed to do it by the skin of our teeth. So without any further ado, here are the Best Villains of 2016.

YHVH – Shin Megami Tensei IV: Apocalypse

2016 Oprainfall Awards | YHVH

NA Release Date: September 20, 2016

Platform(s): 3DS

Review

YHVH, otherwise known as Yehowah, is an important staple in the Shin Megami Tensei games. He is a very lawful being, but that also means that he feels almost no empathy towards anyone. He is ruthless and tyrannical, all in the name of law and order.

Star Dream – Kirby: Planet Robobot

2016 Oprainfall Awards | Star Dream

NA Release Date: June 10, 2016

Platform(s): 3DS

Preview

Star Dream is a very powerful and malevolent being. Originally a machine created to grant wishes to people, it soon developed a mind of its own. Now it wants to exterminate all organic life, and our favorite pink ball is the only one that has any hope of stopping it.

Lily Lucalusa Shamony – Corona Blossom Vol. 2

2016 Oprainfall Awards | Lily Lucalusa Shamony

NA Release Date: October 27, 2016

Platform(s): PC, Steam

Review

Of course, since it’s the Oprainfall Awards, it’s very unsurprising that a girl from an 18+ game got on here. Lily is on here not because she’s evil beyond comprehension, more so that she’s adorable and really memorable. Sure she’s greedy and a bit tsundere, but she’s completely idiotic and is mocked for it constantly by her subordinates. She’s embarrassed about her chest size and is very dishonest about her feelings, but is so cute about it that it’s almost forgivable. She has good intentions, but overall she is a villain through and through.

Trillion – Trillion: God of Destruction

2016 Oprainfall Awards | Trillion

NA Release Date: March 29, 2016

Platform(s): PlayStation Vita, PlayStation TV, Steam

Review

Without good, there is no evil. So, because Gods that create exist, there must also be Gods to destroy. This horrifying being has 1 trillion health in the game (because of course, he does), and when he attacks the entire map glows red. He is a being that was amassed when 1 trillion curses came together. His only purpose is to consume, which he does with ease. Every time he eats a Domain’s Core he grows in size, making him even more terrifying. To make matters worse he almost extinguished the entire Underworld. If that doesn’t terrify you, nothing will.

Lusamine – Pokemon Sun/Moon

2016 Oprainfall Awards | Lusamine Introduction

NA Release Date: November 18, 2016

Platform(s): 3DS

Review

The leader of the Aether Foundation, a seemingly pure organization that seeks to cure wounded Pokemon and protect them from the evil team skull. However, under all the good, their leader is hiding a somewhat sinister plot. Her obsession with the Ultra Beasts and their dimension drives her to do unspeakable things, under the guise of a helpful and seemingly innocent organization.

AND THE WINNER IS…

Lusamine – Pokemon Sun/Moon

2016 Oprainfall Awards | Lusamine's Smile

Unlike most people on this list, Lusamine disguises the fact that she’s evil. As with anyone else looking for “paradise” in a game, she goes about it through completely terrifying means. She became obsessed with the Ultra Beasts and was willing to do anything to get into the Ultra Space. She even went as far as teaming up with a beast and potentially killing Cosmog just so she could have a portal into Ultra Space. She truly is the epitome of evil.

About Dalton McClain

A gamer at heart, and a creator by trade. As a shy kid who grew up in a small town, my only solace was with the games that I enjoyed playing. That being said I enjoy just about every type of game, but more than anything I love playing horror/unique games. I look forward to sharing my knowledge of the strange and unusual with everyone that reads my articles.

Lusamine was a great villain. Overall Sun/Moon really surprised me – it felt more like a rpg story adventure than the typical pokemon game.

I like how she calls out the player, stating that unwanted pokemon are either forgotten in PC boxes forever or released. That the MC was no different than she was – she wanted the beauty in ultra beasts, the player wanted good pokemon to win, and everything else was collectable. Really memorable.

  • Still haven’t beaten Pokémon Moon yet. It’s not really gripping me at all.

Can’t really think of any compelling villains from my experience last year. One from Trails of Cold Steel II comes to mind, but he’s more of an anti-villain.

  • Mr0303

As much as it pisses me off, I have to give my award of villainy for 2016 to Trillion. For one he’s in the title of the game and very much the focus. Secondly, he is quite cool looking with multiple forms and powers and really gives the impression of this unstoppable force that killed everything in its path in a cruel sadistic way (plus there’s the psychological warfare he lead in between battles). Finally he was the only villain this year that was moderately successful against me – he managed to kill off quite a few characters that I liked before I took him down with a character that I didn’t like, so it was kind of a bad ending for me. Rest in piss Trillion, you horrible bastard.

The following villains deserve special mentions – Maletoth from Shadow of the Beast, The Shadow Empress from Aragami and the Master of the Valley from the Last Guardian. All their plans were really malicious and quite cruel. Killing kids and tricking you to murder your previous friends are evils that go a bit further than usual.

  • MusouTensei

I liked Ardyn Izunia from FFXV the most I think, Vita from Trails of Cold Steel 1&2 as close 2nd, so far, as I’m not completely done with the 2nd game.
