In a corporate press release, Sony Interactive Entertainment has announced that sales of PlayStation 4 console units have gone over 40 million worldwide. PS4 software has also done pretty well, with sales of games topping over 270.9 million copies as of May 22.  The PlayStation 4’s biggest release so far this year, Uncharted 4, managed to sell 2.7 million copies in just a week. Sony also appears to be counting on big titles like Final Fantasy XV, Nioh,  Ryu ga Gotoku 6 (Yakuza 6), Gravity Rush, The Last Guardian, and Gran Turismo 6 to help further drive PlayStation 4 software sales in the future.

Good on them. Hopefully they won’t mess this up with the rumoured PS4K release.

I fear that consoles will soon be like smartphone a yearly releasing with Xbox coming with a even more powerful console next year, And let’s face facts soon there is really little point in upgrading cause we will eventually hit the limit on what is actually possible in a sense of massive improvements.

Yeah, every new console generation I think about this – with costs of new game development continuing to rise, at what point will making AAA games be unprofitable? And how much better can graphics really get before it becomes unnoticeable in the difference?

I don’t think that Sony or any other console will be able to have a new version each year – maybe once every 4 or 5 years like the PS2 slim, but a new version every year will be the death knell for home consoles. Nintendo seems to be able to do it with their handhelds every couple of years, but it usually accompanies something like a new Pokemon to get units moving.

As much as I am looking forward to Yakuza 6 and Last Guardian, these won’t be system sellers to the masses. The big sellers are a new GTA, sports titles, Call of Duty, and maybe Gran Turismo.

Damn!!! Almost 3 million for Uncharted 4 in a week. Impressive.

I liked sony more when they had to catch to the xbox 360 sales, being the market leader made them lazy….
