Fire Emblem Fates

This month was full of Fire Emblem Fatesย controversy, but one bit of news has had some light shed on it. Review copies of Fire Emblem Fates have made their rounds and one user has posted gameplay from his copy to YouTube.

The Live2D interactions are still there and can still increase your support rank. However, you may not physically pet them. Voice over and animation are all intact. Interaction begins at 1 hour 26 minutes in.

Fire Emblem Fates will release on 3DS on February 19.

[Author Edit] There is no official word on if all the voice and animations are intact for marriage scenes and other character interaction.

  • Firefox

Assuming all animations and voice are equivalent, I’m fine with this. The petting imo isn’t what made the feature important as much as the dialogue between characters. That being said, that awful voice acting leaves a lot to be desired after awakening…

    • David S

yeah. lack of dual audio always bothers me, since the JP is usually voiced much better. But I won’t pass on a game for that alone. Though I highly doubt the dialogue will be “intact” due to how nintendo loved to tone down (or replace) any risque language.

  • Firion Hope

“Voice over and animation are all intact”

That’s not entirely accurate, judging from the clip there were lots of voiced lines when you pet someone (and even more when you married them) that aren’t there, and lots of different unique animations from petting I’m sure aren’t there.

    • azariosays

Good catch. I will edit to include this.

    • Firion Hope

No prob, just a slight wording error I figured

  • Josh S.

Good, now can everybody calm the fuck down? Lol

    • Steve Baltimore

All they have to do is stop censoring games and it’ll all be fine.

    • NotSayingILikeIt

I’m gonna play devil’s advocate for a moment.

It’s not as simple as that. There’s no censorship switch to simply flick on and off. Censorship is hardly a black and white issue – it is immensely complex, involving countless factors, not the least of which are social, political and economic.

Companies are likely being reactive to the volatile climate here in the West, not proactive. Unfortunately, American culture should be receiving a large portion of the blame.

    • Steve Baltimore

In this particular case there was no reason for this. If they thought this mini game maybe offensive to certain people they could have simply added a switch to turn it on or off.

    • TrueWiiMaster

Part of the problem was probably that the people who would be offended weren’t the ones playing the game. More specifically, a lot of parents would likely take issue with their kids playing the mini-game.

    • David S

Games are rated. If a parent is too lazy to look into what their child is playing, how is that anyone elses fault.

    • TrueWiiMaster

Yes, but that rating doesn’t specify what’s in the game. Most parents wouldn’t think a T game from Nintendo on the 3DS would have something like the petting mini-game. If not for its removal, and the resulting attention, most Fire Emblem fans wouldn’t even know it was in the game until they got it.

And as I mentioned in a different post, Fates was actually rated higher than T in Japan. There it was rated C, for 15+, a rating between T and M that doesn’t exist in America.

    • David S

It still falls to the parent to know what they are playing. I am a parent, and I do take the time to look into what my child is playing and watching. And the obvious solution would simply be to give the game a higher rating above T. The majority of people who play FE are not little kids, or young teens. (though considering Senran Kagura got a T rating, I’m not so sure the content in question would require a higher rating anyway)

    • TrueWiiMaster

That’s true. My point all along wasn’t that Nintendo should “clean” games for parents, but that many parents would expect them to, and might get mad if they don’t. Nintendo is just trying to avoid that kind of outrage.

    • David S

And they just create more outrage of a different kind. Many people have suggested simple solutions, DLC to restore the original content, Parental controls to lock out objectionable material for kids, a “Safe-Space” mode for the hyper sensitive to turn it off. All of which would satisfy those who are angered by the censoring. But Nitty’s respons is “…(crikets)”

    • TrueWiiMaster

Yeah, but that outrage isn’t large or mainstream. It’s a small group. It’s probably pretty small even among the relatively small Fire Emblem fanbase.

As for those solutions, they’d all work, but only for parents who pay close attention to what their kids are playing. As I was saying, any outrage would come from parents who expect Nintendo to do that for them. Unfortunately, that can be a very loud group.

    • David S

I agree. If NoA is so concerned about the material, make use of those parental controls and lock the original behind an age wall. (you can add an optional off for the technical adults who can’t handle it either)

    • NotSayingILikeIt

That’s not really the point that I’m trying to make. It’s easy to say that there’s no reason for this, that a simple switch could have been added (though, to be fair, I’d hardly call that a simple fix. God knows what would go into making just that portion of the game locked behind a parental control wall. Have you ever seen that in any game?).

That’s not really true, though. Nothing is simple. Companies aren’t making these changes to be proactive. They are reacting to something here in the West. We can be mad at Nintendo (and NISA and Atlus and Capcom and XSeed, though Nintendo is by far the most popular to aim the spotlight at), but that’s not really fixing the issue. The issue is what these companies are reacting to. Everybody is fighting the smoke, when they should be putting out the fire.

    • Thomas

Or just dox the hell out of every employee at NoA, which is the better option seeing as they will not listen to cheap words. #doxNoA #downwithNoA

    • Wolfe

Get the fuck out of here you poser ass bitch.

    • Thomas

I’m just stating the fact that cheap, meaningless words are not going to work with such a stubborn company whose LOLcalization staff might as well be made of memers should be doxxed. Regardless if their lives get ruined or not, they deserve it no matter what. And to day otherwise is just saying that words do work, which they don’t and neither do ineffective petitions which of course bombed harder than Persona Emblem M@ster. #doxNoA #downwithNoA

    • Wolfe

You don’t screw with someone’s life and well-being because they screwed up a video game. Get your goddamn head on straight.

    • Steve Baltimore

User was banned. I’m pretty lenient on what folks can say but Doxing or advocating the Doxing of people is not OK.

    • Wolfe

      Amen to that.

  • Mr0303

Cutting one ear is slightly better than removing both, I suppose. In the end you still look disfigured.

  • Thomas

And all the hype is gone, great job NoA.

  • Wolfe

Nope. Stop fiddling with shit, or lose the sale.
    End of discussion.

    • Guest

Well don’t you worry; I’ll make sure to buy a copy to make up for the one you’re skipping.

    • SullenSamurai

Hope you’re not afraid to buy another one to make up for me as well.

    • epy

      And my axe!

    • azariosays

laughing so hard! You guys are great ๐Ÿ™‚
laughing harder at the people spending 200 dollars on ebay for the LE

    • Meh

I guess professionalism really is dead.

    • David S

Professionalism does not preclude a sense of humor. ๐Ÿ™‚

    • Meh

I agree. But in this instance, upvoting all the comments that follow a certain line of thinking, and then “laughing so hard!” is hardly what I’d call professional, especially when followed by mocking people who are willing to buy the game at a higher price.

But that’s just my opinion. ๐Ÿ™‚

    • Wolfe

I love how quick you louts are to throw out ‘professionalism’ when the tide isn’t favoring you. Get your ass back to Kotaku. They’re full of all the ‘professionalism’ you’re looking for, you clod.

    • Meh

What opinion might that be? I don’t believe I stated anything other than my opinion on why laughing at readers was, in my opinion, not professional, and reasoned my case for believing as such.

    • Wolfe

Ah, it’s you again TrueWiiMaster. Resorted to dummy accounts just so you can like your own redundant comments. I’d expect nothing less from a PR shill.

Had I noticed in the first place I wouldn’t have bothered wasting any breath on you. Gotta keep those paychecks coming in, afterall.

    • Meh

You are mistaken, I’m afraid. The other name I’ve used on here is I<3Pawnee. I can't claim TrueWiiMaster's moniker.

I never said that the line lf thinking in question was bad or wrong – in fact, I totally respect the choice of the people, you included, who stand by your values. My comment had zero to do with that line of thinking/reasoning/whatever. It was entirely due to the fact that a writer who said they are here for the readers openly mocked some of his readers. Liking all the comments in a thread but the differing opinion and then laughing at how funny it is sends a pretty clear message. The opinion in question doesn't matter to me. Had it been the exact opposite, I'd feel the same way.

    • Wolfe

I don’t care what you call yourself account to account. Liars have no credibility.

    • azariosays

I kinda see the resemblance ๐Ÿ˜›

I do like seeing them here though ๐Ÿ™‚ creates a good debate some times.

    • azariosays

Hi I just started laughing at the my axe part. It all flowed rather well don’t you think ๐Ÿ™‚

This is a comments section where my professionalism can be a little loose, but I’m sorry for coming off that way.

I do hope you have fun with fire emblem fates: For Western Eyes Version though ๐Ÿ™‚

    • Meh

I wasn’t really looking for an apology, yet this is somehow worse.

I never said anything about buying/playing/supporting Fates, which makes that last comment feel especially condescending.

    • Wolfe

Man shut the hell up already.

    • Meh

Jeez. This is part of the problem. I actually support your stance on the issue here, I make a comment that is misinterpreted, and suddenly I’m not only TrueWiiMaster, but a liar. With no means of disproving it, you’ll continue to attack me, not even knowing who I am.

I suppose then I can assume that you are “Keichi Morisato” who occasionally comments around here, with nothing more than Azario’s edited post to go by, when he accidentally left a response to one of “Keichi’s” posts, calling him “Wolfe.”

And yes. I know. Jump up my own ass and die and all that.

    • Wolfe

Nah, I’ve pretty much said all I’ve got to say to your collective monikers.

    • TrueWiiMaster

Personally, I thought the second half of your statement was what was unprofessional and inappropriate (which was why I upvoted Meh). By “laughing harder” at people unable to get the limited edition version of Fates without paying around triple the price, you came across as bearing ill will against those who want it. Furthermore, scalpers have been a hot topic in the games industry, particularly among Nintendo fans, for buying out and raising the prices of various special editions and amiibo figures. I’d imagine many users, particularly on this site, would take issue with laughing off the practice as a joke.

Also, I don’t know what you think, and I don’t know of any way to prove it, but I’m not Meh. I only have one disqus account, and this is it.

    • Wolfe

No one cares what a PR shill thinks is professional. Go shovel you wares elsewhere.

    • TrueWiiMaster

Rude. And after I specifically avoided responding to you, at your request (and despite so many easily rebutted comments).

That said, I’m still not a “PR shill”. Also, it’s pretty awkward for you to tell me to leave after the writer himself said he appreciates my being here, if only to debate. You even upvoted his comment…

    • Wolfe

Every lying word you speak fills me with disgust. I hope you do find me rude. I hope you feel even a sliver of the disdain that every word you shit onto a screen inspires in me.

You. Make. Me. Sick. You. Lying. Shill.

    • TrueWiiMaster

And yet you invited my words by responding to me when I was leaving you alone…

Where did I lie? Most of what I post is either my opinion, sourced data, or speculation. I make a point of not lying in my comments. If I did lie, please point me to it. If you can’t, clearly I’m not the liar here.

    • Wolfe

You don’t make points. You just show up, shill, and talk in circles. All you ever do. All you’ve ever done. And you know, I really hope you are a shill. Because the alternative is being a pathetic fanboy who shows up to defend their favorite little nostalgia factory in an age of increasing irrelevance. A paycheck I can understand. Clinging to consumerist loyalty is deplorable.

But then, you already know this. Now piss off, you insufferable lying sot.

    • TrueWiiMaster

That sounds like a response from someone who has been defeated by my points, yes, but it doesn’t mention the lying you accused me of. I do occasionally end up talking in circles, but that’s usually led by the person I’m talking to, who keeps making the same argument after I refute it. Obviously the same question begs the same answer, unless the answer was proven wrong.

I don’t really consider myself a fanboy, and I’m certainly not a shill. I just enjoy certain types of games and Nintendo is the best at making them. BTW, that’s not just my opinion. Check with critics. Even this website was started in the hopes of getting games from Nintendo (I know, only Xenoblade was actually made by Nintendo). Nostalgia’s great, but most of Nintendo’s games are awesome with or without it.

And really, what’s more pathetic, defending a company you like and games you enjoy, or attacking a company you hate and games you have no intention of getting?

You didn’t point me toward any lies. If I haven’t lied, then your accusation is itself the lie.

    • Wolfe

Whatever you need to tell yourself buddy.
Least I don’t log in with three different accounts just to upvote myself.
But I guess that what it takes to ‘win’ at internet spats, eh PR boy?

    • TrueWiiMaster

You’re not making any sense. Not only do I not use multiple accounts, but no one has come to help me, and I haven’t come to help anyone else. None of my posts have any upvotes either, and the only posts I upvoted weren’t part of a “spat”. Of the two of us, you’d appear to be the one trying to get upvotes.

    • Wolfe

I’ve no interest in upvotes. In fact, it’s only a matter of time before I get banned. My only interest in drilling home the point that you are a goddamned liar and a shill.

I notice you made your profile private too after I made a point of seeking out your posts to discover they only appeared on Nintendo-oriented sites where you continuously spouted your PR bullshit in the same, tiresome fashion you do here.

Not too surprising that after your attempts to ‘debate’ (or truthfully, badger) others here failed to win you any real support, we suddenly started seeing verbal support from unregistered accounts like ‘Meh’.

So again. I’m not interested in debating with a liar and a shill. I’m just going to tell you that you’re a fucking liar and it’s transparent. Go ahead shill. Write up a three page response to assure everyone you’re not.

    • TrueWiiMaster

You’ve done a poor job of that. You haven’t cited a single lie.

I did that months ago after you went through months of my comment history and started talking to other users about it. It was creepy. Besides, your account is blocked too, and was blocked before mine. I guess I shouldn’t be surprised you’d lie about my disqus history at this point. When you looked through my history, you found rainfall, political sites, and Wii U Daily. You accused me of selectively deleting my history of going elsewhere, but I still don’t know if that’s even possible. It was just another lie.

First, I don’t badger. Badgering would be much more in line with what you do. I don’t chase after people, insult people, threaten people, etc. like you do. Second, I was never seeking to garner support. If someone agrees with me, cool, but I’m only here to state my opinion, and discuss. If I just wanted to gain support, I could make posts like you do. And third, when did Meh (or anyone else, actually) offer me any support here? Meh even said they held the opposite position to mine about Fates.

You never gave a single example of me lying, implying that you are indeed the liar.

I don’t need three pages, and anyone who believes you, despite your complete lack of evidence or reasoning, probably won’t be convinced. They want to believe you, and so they will.

    • Wolfe

I love that even though I responded to you, TrueWiiMaster, your alt-ego showed up within the same hour, somehow notified of the mention to assure me you are two totally different people.

This farce is at an end. Keep your forked tongue behind your reptilian lips.

Or hell, continue talking to yourself. It will be equally absurd whatever you do.

    • Dontevengivetwoshits

As for you… I don’t even know. Believe what you want. Best of luck on your journey of alienation.

    • Wolfe

      Same to ya, Mr. Dent.

    • TrueWiiMaster

You, of all people, are going to say that? You do that all the time. Most of the responses I get from you are from me talking to someone else, when you jump in, usually very quickly, to attack me. In fact, that’s how this conversation started. I posted to azariosays, and in an hour or less you responded to me. In this case, you mentioned Meh by name, and they saw it, so they responded. They don’t need to be notified to bring up the page and scroll down. If that’s really too shocking for you to believe could happen without orchestration, that’s your problem.

You’ve yet to give any good reason or evidence that anything I’ve said or done was a “farce”. You just keep saying it, perhaps hoping that repetition will make more people believe you. As I said, the only reason for anyone to believe you is a desire to do so.

    • Wolfe

And you’ve yet to do more than repeat, “I am not.”
      Fuck off already.

    • TrueWiiMaster

What else would you have me do, when you give me nothing to rebut, no evidence to refute? As the one making the accusation, the burden of proof is on you.

How is the length of my response relevant?

As a “random internet commentator”, I make no claim to impartiality. I already said that I like Nintendo and their games, and I’m certainly not alone there. Even so, liking Nintendo doesn’t discredit my opinions or points. And as I’ve told you before, my name really doesn’t matter. I could change it to MasterOfSony, and my points would be the same. Only desperate opponents challenge my username rather than face my questions and points.

So because I made a comment around 8am Pacific (actually before), that proves I work at Nintendo? Seriously? And what about the fact that I was posting last night, at what would have been 9-10pm Pacific? This is definitely one of your more ridiculous, and seemingly desperate, attacks, and that’s really saying something. BTW, and you probably won’t believe me, I live on the east coast.

    • Wolfe

You could simply be silent and look less a fool. But that’s contrary to your behavior. You absolutely have to get in the last word in every single discussion, because that ensures you the faulty sense that you’ve maintained direction of tone.

Well I got news for ya, buddy. I can shit post all day. Just like you. So buckle in, TrueShillMaster.

    • TrueWiiMaster

I have a reason to post, namely to defend myself. You, who claim to be disgusted by my words, and claim to not care what I think or say, do not. In fact, according to your own words, you have reason to stop responding, and yet you don’t. You even came to me after telling me to leave you alone, which I did. And now you threaten to keep responding to me all day, despite claiming to hate talking to me? Obsession really isn’t a healthy thing, you know.

Also, while I do tend to argue for a while, I don’t always get the last word. In a proper argument, in which one side either concedes or agrees to disagree, the argument usually ends. It’s when I’m arguing with people like you, who repeatedly make up information and reuse the same flawed and refuted points, hoping that their opponent will think it futile and give up, that I continue to argue. Don’t worry, though. I actually enjoy countering such trolls.

    • Wolfe

The notion that you have ever had a proper argument is as laughable as your continued attempts to justify your shit posting. Nice touch that you round-about admitted you enjoy taking up space in a comments section though.

    • TrueWiiMaster

Says the guy who has done nothing in this comment section but insult people… I’m not sure you understand what a proper argument is.

And again, my posts are justified. Yours are not. If you disagree, explain why.

    • Wolfe

Says the guy who does nothing but show up to excuse the company who he loves so much it marks his very handle. C’mon shill. Earn that check.

    • TrueWiiMaster

I can’t “excuse” Nintendo from anything; it’s up to each individual to decide if what they did was wrong or important. I can say, however, that I don’t personally care about very minor changes during localization, and that I think the majority of people are the same. I can also say that great games will be great, even if extraneous parts are removed or altered. If you’d like to argue against those beliefs, feel free.

And again, attacking my username is a desperation move. I could change it anytime, and it would have no effect on what I say.

    • Wolfe

Nah, attacking your choice of handle is just sticking a finger in an open wound and rooting around. Not my fault you can’t hide your complete devotion to your employer.

    • TrueWiiMaster

But there is no wound… Like I said, I choose to have this username, even if it gives desperate opponents such as yourself a target, albeit a poor one.

    • Wolfe

Opponent? My, my, don’t your fancy yourself with some generous labels. You sir, and I use that title loosely, are little more than an amusement. And not a terribly interesting one at that.

    • TrueWiiMaster

I would actually say I was the one being generous with the word, since I’m not the one resorting simply to insults and other groundless attacks. Also, it’s kind of interesting that you went from saying I make you sick, and I disgust you, and you can’t stand me, to saying I’m entertaining, which implies you’re enjoying talking to me.

    • Wolfe

Nah, you’re a guy who gets paid to proudly engage self-professed trolls for the hollow gratification of assuring yourself that you’ve achieved some sort of victory after days of furiously tapping away at a keyboard.

But again, at least you’re getting paid for it.

    • TrueWiiMaster

Says the guy who said he’d spend all day furiously tapping away at a keyboard just to respond to someone he claims is being paid (still not being paid, btw)…

My victories come from countering lies with truth, not repeatedly posting insults and nonsense like you’ve done.

And did you just call yourself a self-professed troll?

    • Wolfe

LOL, you just can’t help it? You HAVE to keep tapping away. Better still, you keep trying to pose some sort of reasonable argument where there is none. And best of all, you think ANY of this matters. That you can win by typing into a blank window to an audience of no one.

Oh, and double LOL at the mistaken notion that ‘opinion’ is ‘truth’. I imagine that sort of thought process comes built-in with being an egomaniac who thinks his internet spats are an accomplishment.

      You’re fucking pathetic.

    • TrueWiiMaster

You do realize that everything you just said, except for the reasonable argument part, applies equally, if not moreso, to you, right? Of course, it’s even worse for you, because you claim I’m getting paid (still not), but claim you aren’t. In other words, you claim this is my job, and that’s why I do it, while claiming to do it yourself for free.

I wasn’t referring to my opinion there (an opinion typically isn’t true or false). I was referring to the data I usually use to counter outright lies or misguided positions. Generally it’s data that wins arguments.

You say that, and yet can’t help but continue responding to me…

    • Wolfe

What I realize is that this is entirely inconsequential and we’re both wasting time for the hell of it. But please, continue to lecture an empty screen and reassure yourself that this, and by extension, you and your efforts matter.

    • TrueWiiMaster

“What I realize is that this is entirely inconsequential and we’re both wasting time for the hell of it.”
That may be the truest statement you ever said, though it does contradict your claim that I do this for a living.

The second half of your comment would come off much better if you weren’t sitting there lecturing an empty screen about how lecturing an empty screen is inconsequential.

    • Wolfe

And you would benefit from the ability to short hand all that hot air.

    • TrueWiiMaster

After the quote I took from you, that was only 5 lines.

    • Wolfe

      That’s the way!

    • TrueWiiMaster

      No problem.

    • Meh

Sorry for any trouble I may have caused you. I know this post will only make it worse, but I have no ill will towards you or your opinions, in case it seemed I was implying as much. I’m out. This site has become a damn shitshow. Can’t even recognize when a supporter agrees with a message, but not with its delivery. It’s heading down the same path as nichegamer, and I’m over it.

    • TrueWiiMaster

You didn’t do anything to cause me trouble, and I didn’t think you bore anything against me. This started because I upvoted you, and apparently cursed you to harassment in so doing. Sorry about that. You’d probably be fine if you changed your username, though I get the nagging feeling that he accuses any dissenting voice of being me if the argument goes on long enough.

    • Meh

Aaaaaactually you’re not really right. I’ve made posts with this same, unregistered name before. One on a Hatsune Miku article, and the other on the hentai guy’s interview. Neither of which offered verbal support to anyone.

There is one thing I agree with – you’ve made up your mind, and nothing will change it. Not really sure why, but hey, it is what it is, right? Why bother with grouping together to solve problems when we can fight amongst ourselves instead, calling other people who share a similar view liars and turning on our own supporters.

But I guess that’s me being a lying PR shill. Good thing I didn’t quit my day job for it.

    • Wolfe

I’m sure Nintendo appreciates your blind consumerism. Enjoy that hole in your wallet.

    • Guest

An intitial 40 dollar investment for one portion is a hole to you? I don’t know about you, but I have this thing called a “job” that gives me “spending money” to do what I please with.

    • Guest

And said “job” will allow me to purchase the extra story modes when I’m good and ready to. I’m not going to flip out over missing 80 bucks in the long run; I make more than that in a day.

    • Guest

But I guess you’re right. Maybe a pinhole is still technically a hole of sorts.

    • Wolfe

Yes, the internet is full of anonymous millionaires such as yourself.

    • Snea Zel

I thought this was the game I was going to give a chance as my first FE game since the original because I really liked the art direction. But meh, I think i’m with you when I say I don’t want to pay full price for a watered down version. Maybe if they lowered the price after cutting the game it’d be more reasonable (that’ll never happen).

  • TrueWiiMaster

I really have no problem with Nintendo removing such an awkward and unnecessary mini-game. If that’s what someone was buying the game for, I’d understand why they’d be mad, but most people buy Fire Emblem for the turn-based strategy gameplay, not to pet the characters. Most people never knew about the “feature”, and certainly won’t miss it.

If you still don’t understand why people are against censorship, regardless of what is cut, you never will. I didn’t have much interest in the petting game other than the few chuckles I may have gotten from it. It wasn’t something that was drawing me to the game. But removing it, or neutering it completely has certainly pushed me away from the game. Why? because I can’t accept censored games. And censorship when allowed, will only get worse. Don’t believe me? lets take a look at NoA’s offering in the last year or so

Bravely Default – skimpy costumes altered, cleaned up dialogue (made Ringabel less pervy)
      – It’s a small change not too bad, right?

Fatal Frame 5 – Removed skimpy outfits from an M rated game, altered a cut-scene with said skimpy outfit.
-Not terrible, Lingerie didn’t fit in a horror game, and that scene was only to titillate… Wait, didn’t that scene serve a purpose? and why are we putting costumes from T rated games into an M rated game?

XenoBlade Chronicles X – they only censored Lin’s skimpy bikini, and a bust slider… wait? we’re already up to removing customization options? And it wasn’t JUST the skimpy outfits, it was almost all of Lin’s outfits. And a costume was altered for all characters, not just Lin?

Fire Emblem – Do I need to list what is known and suspected in this article? -Characters re-written, relationship options removed, mini-games removed or gutted to an unknown extent… and I’m sure that list will grow after release the same way it always does with NoA localizations.

Bravely Second- We already know some outfits were made less skimpy, and an entire class of character was erased and replaced with possible the most offensive choice in gaming history.

It ONLY gets worse when allowed to happen.

I completely understand why some people are against censorship, even when it’s self-censorship of minor content. I just think most people, myself included, don’t really care. I could get mad that something I didn’t care about was removed from a game during localization, but since I don’t care about it, I’d rather just enjoy the game. I can pretty much guarantee that the removal of this mini-game will have no impact on how much I enjoy Fates, and I think that applies to a lot of people. If not for the attention being brought to its removal, most people wouldn’t even know it was gone.

That applies to most of the other cases of “censorship” as well. Minor costume changes have little to no impact on how enjoyable a game is, especially when it’s understandable why they were changed, like in the cases involving almost naked minors being covered up. If the censorship escalates to changing major parts of the game, then I’ll start getting mad. Bravely Second changing a whole class is definitely getting there.

Well, if you don’t care, you don’t care. I’m not out to convince anyone else, and I’ve seen enough of your post to know I could never convince you even if I was. I personally cannot enjoy a game that has been censored because I know I’m not getting the true version. Some Companies get it, like Xseed, and IFI is getting their $hit together too.

Bottom line, self censorship is the worst kind, and I will never understand it as all it says to me is that Nintendo doesn’t respect it’s customers, or it’s own medium.

Games are protected from Government censorship because they are considered art. But Games will never truly be art until the publishers stop self censoring and show respect for their own medium, and by extension their customers.

If Fates was seriously altered, I couldn’t enjoy it as much either, but the reality is that I wouldn’t have played the mini-game much, if at all, even if it was still there. In other words, my play-through would be pretty much the same either way. The same goes for Xenoblade Chronicles X and its changes.

That’s one way to look at it, but the opposite could also be said. The removal of the “drugging” scene, for instance, could be said to be out of respect to homosexuals. Most of the changes Nintendo has made were made in the name of localization, making the games more acceptable to their new audience, not to disrespect the small group of people who want a pure Japanese game in English. It’s really a case of being unable to please everyone, so you try to please as many as possible.

One right artists have is the right to creative freedom. Nintendo also has this right, and exercises it as they wish. That includes changing content they created, regardless of what people want them to do. Ironically, to deny them that right would be a form of censorship.

I understand where you’re coming from. Like I said, not trying to convince. I wouldn’t have used the mini-game much either, but like I said, it the principal. Allowing anything to be censored will eventually lead to thing I do care about being censored. I think some fans of Steven Universe experience this just recently. (I don’t watch so I only know a little about it)

As for the “drugging’ scene, despite it being completely misinterpreted, I would rather have had it in there even if it was full on gay conversion. Because it’s more interesting to have characters with flaws, bad personality traits, and unpleasant hangups. NoA tend to make every character bland, or un-flawed, and often rewrite characters to eliminate anything seen as less than perfect. It’s just dull.

Localization used to be a good thing. It was to take complicated dialogue and interaction and make it understandable for a different language and culture. But it’s turned into a process of stripping out anything that may be offensive, or controversial and difficult. It is now, rightly, seen more as a form of censorship, and it’s more insidious because not everyone has noticed they are the same thing now, and too many give ‘localization’ a pass.

Where artists rights are concerned, I agree up to a point. If it was an unpublished work, I would say yes, they are free to alter as much as they want until they release it, but not after. I have no issue with the changes to the Idol scene for SMTxFE because while it looks terribly lazy, it was done in development, not after release or for different regions. Same for SF5 and the butt slap. The change is dumb, but the game is still in development, and if it’s in not in the JP release, I don’t expect it in the NA release.

FE is not an unpublished work, and NoA is not the artist, they are the localizer. Altering games the way they do is like publishing Huckelberry Finn in another country, but rewriting Jim to a rich old white guy to avoid the issues of racism and stereo typing that were prevalent in the time.

I feel David’s rage as though it were my own.

Too little too late Nintendo. The damage is done, the hype has died and all anyone talks about is the censoring now.

Even with the less(?) drastic censoring of the petting game, I still have no interest. Aside from the mini game, the re-written characters has put me off more than anything. I still cringe anytime someone mentions a crow thanks to the trash localization 8-4 did on Awakenings dialogue. I still plan on importing and getting the fan translation. I have no interest in generic, hollow, homogenized characters.

Big deal? I’m pretty sure if whether or not I could pet my waifu was a make-or-break decision for me, I’d have a Vita instead.

For those saying “Just Play the Japanese Version”: not everyone is fluent in Japanese.
