No boost power for Wii U.

If you were looking for some positive Nintendo related news following their “questionable” E3 showing, then you’re not going to find it here. In fact, you could say this is the bitter cherry on top of the disappointing E3 cake.

F-Zero is a series loved by many, but it could be argued that Nintendo has not given the futuristic – high speed – racer enough attention over the last decade… and then some. Indeed, the last true F-Zero game appeared on the Nintendo Gamecube in 2003 – to critical acclaim – and until now, you’d think Nintendo had all but forgotten about it. Although, there have been some nods recently, what with F-Zero themed tracks appearing in Mario Kart 8 and that shambolic mini game in Nintendo Land. So maybe there is some Captain Falcon light at the end of the tunnel? Or maybe not…

Nintendolife and Unseen64 have revealed that a planned pitch for a new F-Zero game was discussed between Nintendo of Europe and Criterion – the studios behind the Burnout series. The plan was for the new game to be a “launch title” along with the Wii U, and was to be showcased during Nintendo’s E3 of that same year. It’s no surprise that Nintendo reached out to a third party for this, seeing as F-Zero GX was developed by SEGA’s Amusement Vision.

Unfortunately, Criterion were too busy developing Need for Speed: Most Wanted at the time, so they weren’t able to put their resources into the development of a new F-Zero game.

    F-Zero by the makers of Burnout? That could make for an interesting collaboration. I’ve few doubts but what it’ll happen if enough people are screaming for it, and I think they *should* be.

    I just hope they take more creative direction from Burnout Revenge than any other game in Criterion’s racing franchise.

    Far as I’m concerned, F-Zero’s all about [speed] and [wiping out your opponents], and as *serious racing games*, go those are two things that I considered Burnout Revenge to be the second-best game in the field for, next to F-Zero of course. (Mario Kart and its followers have always lacked the speed factor; they’re just not dynamic enough for it in terms of track design.)

    That said, it’s fair to say that the most important secondary appeal factors within the F-Zero series, since the last game’s release anyway, have been [vehicle customization] and [tuning].

    Both of those ideas were both prominent and integral to both the competitive scene, as well as to casual fans like myself. I’d spend hours trying to get my machine built exactly the way I wanted it, from color down to the handling and other stats. The collection factor was nice, as well – a bonus of freedom, as a prize for playing with rigged machines in matches with challenging win conditions.

    On that note, I would like to see more complexity in terms of win conditions. I think there’s a lot that remains unexplored in the realm of 3D racing physics. And Nintendo and Criterion seem to be the major players to go to for that.
