Warner Bros. Interactive Entertainment and NetherRealm Studios today announced Mortal Kombat X, the next entry in the long-running ultra-violent fighting franchise. The game, which will be the first Mortal Kombat title to appear on next-generation consoles, will be releasing sometime in 2015 on PlayStation 3, PlayStation 4, Xbox 360, Xbox One, and PC. The game will feature an original story, new characters, multiple variations of each character — which Warner Bros. promises will impact “both strategy and fighting style” — and a “fully-connected experience that launches players into a persistent online contest where every fight matters in a global battle for supremacy.” Warner Bros. promises that this will be the “most brutal Kombat ever”, which should be a sight to see given the violence that this series is known for.

In addition to the announcement, Warner Bros. has released a teaser trailer for the game, which can be viewed below. The game will be making its first full appearance at E3 2014.

The Mortal Kombat series began in 1992 with the release of Mortal Kombat, which generated controversy due to its violent content. The series has become known for its “fatalities”, oftentimes violent finishing moves that can be performed by a player on a downed opponent at the end of a match. After a three year hiatus, the series was brought back into the spotlight with the 2011 release of Mortal Kombat (the ninth title in the series), which garnered both critical and commercial success.
