Ike - StandingIke has just been confirmed as a playable character in the fourth Smash Brothers game, due out later this year across the world.

This announcement has taken me by surprise. I was expecting Ike to get the boot in favour of Chrom, the protagonist from the latest entry in the Fire Emblem series. I am quite happy to see him back though, and looking as muscly as ever. I’m a little flustered.

Ike seems to be sporting his Radiant Dawn look, and appears to have retained the counter and Great Aether from Brawl. It also looks like he’s kept Quick Draw, judging from the third image down on the right; I’m not certain that that’s what it is, but I believe so.

Stroking Sword Ike - Glaring
Ike - Samus Awesome Counter
Ike - Manly Quick Draw
Great Aether Fire Emblem Buddies
Ike - Flying Ike - Stepping

I love Ike to pieces, but was not expecting him back in the next game at all. I thought he was going to be superceded by Chrom. What do you all make of this, and how likely is it that Chrom is going to make it into the roster given both Ike and now Marth are in? Will Sakurai allow Fire Emblem a third representative?

Super Smash Brothers for the 3DS will be out within the next few months, with the Wii U version due out at the end of the year.

I think Ike was chosen so they could tease the possibility of a new FE game on the Wii U since Ike’s the posterboy for the console versions in America. Plus, it’ll be fresh in people’s minds from SMTxFE.

I was thinking maybe a new Tellius game announcement incoming? I would love that. Otherewise, I don’t understand this.

    • Justin Graham

There’s also Shin Megami Tensei X Fire Emblem in the works, and we don’t know who specifically is in it and how prominently.

  • Said it everywhere else, so will say it again here: #WhyNotChrom?

  • Matt

If Chrom was going to be introduced, he’d have to have been Marth’s replacement, not Ike’s. That said, there’s always the possibility of clones DLC.

  • MusubiKazesaru

wtf? I’m gonna be mad if Chrom or a FE:A character doesn’t get in now (I’m particularly invested in that game)

  • multibottler0cket

What would be cool would be an FE character who uses a different weapon type, like Ephraim or Hector or something. (I would love to see Nephenee but that will NEVER happen :P)

    • Dude, Nephenee in SSB4 would make me squeal with delight. Man. Almost makes me want to replay Radiant Dawn just thinking about it. What a powerhouse!

    • multibottler0cket

      She’s the best <3

I've always liked lance wielding characters (ever since I played FFIV when I was like six), and she's so good!

Also, there are almost no light lance infantry units in all of Fire Emblem. Knights are cool and stuff, but they're slow and bulky. Nephenee is one of the coolest FE characters.

    • Vinicius

      Personally I would preffer Titania.

    • multibottler0cket

Could be cool too. Mostly I think that they need more weapon types and maybe a female character at some point for FE characters in Smash Bros.

  • James Best

    I like Ike.

  • Glad to see this SSB kicker back.
Nevertheless I am worry about one character. It is an historic SSB character, which is in the roaster since the first game on N64. Captain Falcon has not been announced yet and I fear that it won’t be in the final roster. It is one of the best SSB character and it may not be in the Wii U. Nintendo can bury F Zero if it wants to. But please keep Captain Falcon in SSB.

    • Ninty

I’m pretty sure that Nintendo owns F-Zero.

    • Vinicius

They said they wouldn’t show secret Charachters, maybe Cap is a hidden Charachter.

    • So it had better to be one of them, alongside Ness, Wolf O’Donell and Shulk.

    • Justin Graham

I wouldn’t hold my breath for Wolf returning. In a game that already had a Fox clone in Falco, Wolf was even more extraneous.

I, for one, believe Robin could totally get in instead of Chrom. I’d be very happy with that, too. It’d be something from Fire Emblem that isn’t a blue haired, sword wielding lord!
