shin megami tensei iv feature

Some new info on Atlus’ upcoming title, Shin Megami Tensei IV, has just been brought to light. As revealed in Dengeki, the weapons and equipment you will find in the cities of post-apocalyptic Tokyo and medieval Mikado will have large repercussions as you progress through the game. The main character, Flynn (the default name for the silent protagonist you control), will have to equip his gear carefully, as both his stats and the attack patterns he uses will be affected.

As shown in the two preview images above, the weapons you equip will change the attack animation that the protagonist will have as he explores the dangerous 3D world of Shin Megami Tensei IV. Those who have played Atlus’ other popular RPG games, Persona 3 and Persona 4, should be able to see the resemblance the two series share in terms of their gameplay. In Shin Megami Tensei IV, you will be able to get the early initiative in the turn-based battles with enemies by successfully landing an attack on the 3D over-world through horizontal sword slashes and lunging spear trusts. Players should beware, because not only will your character be able to land early attacks, but your enemies will be capable of them as well.

The report also showed the importance that armor and equipment will play as you progress through the game. While the equipment will give you the added bonus of customizing the main character’s appearance,  their main contribution will be used to change the character’s stats, which will increase his ability in battle and his chance to survive mortal blows. Equipment will affect the main character’s strength, agility, endurance, magic, and his luck.

The equipment that Flynn will be able to acquire is broken down into four armor categories. Helmets will be able to boost HP and MP, the upper body armor will be able boost resistances, raise HP, or raise MP, the lower body armor will be able to affect your HP and MP as well. Finally, accessories will increase HP and MP with an added bonus of having unique special effects not found in the other three armor categories.

Guns will also make a comeback as well, which will not only affect ranged damage and accuracy, but also the gun techniques that will complement Flynn’s melee attacks.

Shin Megami Tensei IV will be available in stores on May 23rd in Japan, with a North American release on July 16th.
