After acting as a catalyst upon the reveal for a new Mighty Switch Force, Destructoid’s Jonathan Holmes does it again as the Wayforward news magnet, investigating the activities by the recently established studio Yacht Club Games, a studio run by former Wayforward staff Sean Valesco.

Mr. Holmes would share an open letter by the former Wayforward staff to the world:

“Hello World!

It’s with great excitement that we announce the formation of Yacht Club Games: a proudly independent game developer started in 2011 by Sean Velasco and a crew from WayForward. We are a fun-loving bunch of gaming geniuses who have dedicated our lives to video games ever since we saw our first pixels. However, our serious and solemn goal is to make really awesome games that fuse modern and retro game philosophies, and we have the pedigree to prove it! Our team is comprised of top talent that has worked on some amazing titles, including Contra 4, A Boy and His Blob, Thor: God of Thunder, Mighty Milky Way, BloodRayne: Betrayal, and most recently, Double Dragon Neon.

So what are we all about? While our team is synonymous with retro revivals, we want to share our original brand of personality! We want to create fun and challenging gameplay with concise and polished mechanics. We want to both tug at your heartstrings and delight you with levity and charm. We want to make games that you play together with friends and family. Most of all, we want to give everyone the same collective types of game experiences that have defined our generation. It’s such an exciting time to be a fan of games; the industry is experiencing a renaissance and creativity is flourishing. We are so, so excited to develop games that we love, in hopes that you love them too. Let’s make a splash!

Yacht Club Games have also announced that it is not a freemium or social studio, but a full-fledged gaming development staff that promises gameplay-centric titles on gamer-centric platforms. This can be reassuring information for those who fear minimization for the development staff responsible for providing unique and quality games.

In additional news, Yacht Club Games has posted an image for a mysterious new title in the works on its Facebook page, teasing its appearance for the upcoming PAX East event. Judging by the silhouettes, the characters remain consistent to that of the games by Wayforward, with their unique designs and visually pleasing sprite-based art.

Looking at the designs, it may be implied that the characters come from a fantasy setting, perhaps hinting that the new game will have magic and melee-based action, and possibly RPG elements. The figures make shape of witches, ogres, Oriental swordsmen, pirates, and mages; there is a variety of characters, who may be involved in standalone stories, or may work as a party group. The varying cast may even warrant a longer and more fulfilling story than games previously made by Wayforward staff.

Nobody but the creative team and Jonathan Holmes — because he’s so close with Wayforward — know much about the game, but there will definitely be more info by the time PAX begins. We may also see what platforms this will be released on.
Thank you once again Mr. Jonathan Holmes, for providing us information on everything that is Wayforward!
