On May 19th, the Paul Gale Network shared a rumor regarding the WiiU game that Retro studios has been working on. This game, dubbed “Star Fox – Metroid: Fusion Saga”, would cross over two of Nintendo’s highly regarded franchises.

The game begins as the Starfox team explores a Meteos-like stage that eventually leads to them crashing into Samus’ ship. The stories of Fox McCloud and Samus Aran would intertwine while players experience both aerial and on-foot gameplay as both characters.

While playing as the Fox, the gameplay focuses mostly on the space battles the series is known for. Expect plenty of on-rails shooting and witty banter between members of the Starfox team. Eventually, Fox would explore the land on foot as he did in Starfox Adventures.

Samus’ gameplay is said to be in mostly first person. She would be completely isolated, stripped of her armor upon arrival, and she must traverse the planet to get it back.  While trying to get it back, she must fight bosses and repair her ship.  Eventually, Samus would fly her ship and gameplay would be similar to the Starfox games.

This game is meant to effectively blend the most beloved gameplay elements of both franchises. The game is said to be epic in size, scope, and ambition!

PGN has leaked games and information before. They were the first site to leak “Playstation All Stars: Battle Royale” . This time, they were only given enough information to confirm that this was at least an idea pitched to Nintendo, if nothing else.

With E3 just around the corner, what will become of this rumored Starfox / Metroid crossover?

Is this something you all are interested in? How would Fox McCloud and Samus Aran interact with one another? Share your thoughts in the comments below!

You probably should have mentioned that this is considered a mega rumor and that the source doesn’t even know whether or not it’s true.

  • I’m really not sure how I’d feel about this rumor being true. I enjoy Metroid, and I like Star Fox well enough, but I’m not convinced that this crossover concept is a winner. If it’s real, I’m sure that Retro could do a decent job of it, but I’d rather they worked on something else.

  • It’s a pretty big rumour all right, and it would be pretty disappointing to find out it isn’t true once e3 rolls around.  I have a feeling that that card-like object might again just be part of the development kit.

But who knows, they might have already trumped the idea of a “StreetPass Card” with whatever those mystrious little squares are, or perhaps with something we haven’t even seen in that picture!

…on a side note, anyone wondering about the livestream episodes lately, we’ve been going through a couple of changes at the office, so things are somewhat crippled at the moment and I apologize again for that (I’m not sure if that’s worthy of a full post, so it occured to me to mention it while I was commenting here). Hopefully everything will turn out for the better, but we will definitely return to complete Shin Megami Tensei and more games afterwards.

I’m just gonna go ahead and say this right now, I don’t mean to be a downer or anything but I think this is an absolutely terrible idea. This is the equivalent of making a Zelda game and throwing Mario in it. These franchises should be there own game and thats that. This crossover stuff just doesn’t make any SENSE. Better be a rumor thats all I’m saying.

    •  You’re not alone. Miyamoto is the one who said that Nintendo characters shouldn’t interact with one another unless there was a really compelling reason to do so.

I forget the source, but there was something about a Super Mario Galaxy 2 developer’s idea to have Donkey Kong or Olimar make an appearance in the game. Miyamoto shot it down for the reason cited above.

I’m not about to condemn Nintendo or Retro for suggesting the idea, but I just feel like there’s a better way to go about offering things on an “epic scale” for both franchises…with their own respective game(s).

  • Hi there and thank you for sharing your interest in Retro Studios’ rumored Wii U title in development, Star Fox – Metroid: Fusion Saga.  When I shared this information on Paul Gale Network, I was sure to call it a RUMOR and just that for now.

Without having concrete evidence as to whether this game is real and currently in development or was simply pitched around to various people at Retro Studios and Nintendo to be eventually dropped, it’s safest to just remain cautious.

I would recommend people to remain optimistic in the company’s ability to deliver on such a game if it’s indeed real, as Retro Studios has proven in the past to be a very competent company.  But I’d also suggest everyone to not necessarily take this as 100% truth.

With exclusive reveals that I’ve shared in the past (with the most recent being PlayStation All-Stars Battle Royale), when I knew it to be legitimate, I guaranteed its authenticity, 100%.  In this case, please know that it’s still an unconfirmed rumor.

If I learn anything new prior to E3, I will be sure to share it…permitted I can.  Thank you again for your feedback.
