Studio Ghibli’s latest animated feature, The Wind Rises, has a new trailer with English subtitles in anticipation of its premiere at the Toronto International Film Festival. Take a look.
As the trailer points out, The Wind Rises pays tribute to two historical figures Jiro Horikoshi and Tatsuo Hori. Horikori was the designer of the famous WWII-era Zero fighter while Hori was a poet and writer during the WWII era. Horikoshi’s role is self evident, but Hori’s role is a little bit more interesting.
Hori wrote a novel, Kaze Tachinu or The Wind Has Risen, that tells the tale of an unnamed male narrator. It centers around his observations on life, death, and how all of it stems from his relationship to Setsuko, a woman stricken with tuberculosis. Fast forward to 2009, Hayao Miyazaki of Studio Ghibli fame adapted the novel into a manga series of the same name with some alterations. He replaced the unnamed narrator with Horikoshi and later adapted the series into a movie which was released last July in Japan.
The Wind Rises will be screened at the TIFF on August 20th.
