Elfen Lied
This anime follows Lucy, who is a diclonius; a new form of human with invisible arms called vectors. As she escapes a research facility she has been held in for many years, she gets injured. The result of this is the formation of a second personality called Nyu. Though Lucy is vicious and violent, Nyu is very innocent. She is discovered on the beach by Kohta and his cousin Yuka, who take her in. This is one of the most violent and bloody anime I can think of, but the overall story me is about what it means to human.
Serial Experiments Lain
This anime asks the question, how connected are we? The story follows a young girl named Lain Iwakura, who is seemly normal shy girl. Lain soon discovers a world inside the wired. The wired would refer to any communication network that exist on Earth. This is really psychological anime will make you question a lot things by the series end. It amazes me today how much this anime applies to life now than did it when I saw it many years ago. For more information about this anime you can check out our Anime of the Past series.
Demon City Shinjuku
A battle between the evil Rebi Ra and Genichirou the hero is taking place. Rebi Ra is attempting to gain enormous power and summon demons to take over the world. After defeating Genichirou, Rebi Ra then destroys Shinjuku, and this area becomes a demon-infested land. The story takes place ten years later as the world president is attacked by Rebi Ra. Kore wa Zombie Desu ka? (a.k.a. Is This a Zombie?)
I know what you’re thinking; this in a horror list. Well, it has zombies and other supernatural beings in it, so it fits into this list nicely. Ayumu Aikawa is resurrected by the cutest necromancer in the history of the world, Eucliwood Hellscythe, after being murdered. Soon after, he encounters a magical girl named Haruna and a vampire ninja named Seraphim. Circumstances eventually lead to them all living together, so the harem fun can begin.
Boogiepop Phantom
Years after a series of mysterious murders, a mysterious pillar of light appeared in the sky in a city somewhere in Japan. The story follows a group consisting mostly of high school students that witnessed the event at that time. They soon start to vanish one by one, which is blamed on a legend called the Boogiepop; the Boogiepop is supposedly death itself.
That’s it for our list of the top 15 horror-themed anime. We hope you enjoyed it. Be sure to let us know which entries you think are crazy and which horror anime would make it into your top 15.
