Since its reveal at SCEJA Press Conference 2013, the game industry has been abuzz about Sony’s new console, the PS Vita TV. However, those Western fans hoping to get their hands on it may have to wait awhile.
In an interview with Tech-On!, SCE president Andrew House detailed his company’s plans for the PS Vita TV and how it is being aimed at the Asian market. In the same interview, he added that the new hardware will not be seeing a release in the West at this time.
House explained the PS Vita TV will be launched in Japan this November, with a China and South Korea release following shortly after. This aim at the Asian region is due to Sony believing there is potential in the video streaming market there. The company is definitely taking a risk in China, whose government currently bans the sale of game consoles. This ban, Sony believes, will soon be dropped, leading to regions like Shanghai’s free trade zone becoming big business opportunities.
This potential Sony sees in Asia might not be present in the West, which could explain why a North American and European release of the Vita TV is not currently in Sony’s sights.
The PS Vita TV will be released in Japan on November 14, 2013, and will sell for ¥9,480 (approximately $95.44 USD and €71.79). Until more news on Sony’s plans for the Vita TV comes in, Western fans can only cross their fingers and hope they will not be ignored.
