Those waiting for the long awaited 3DS Miiverse and Nintendo Network IDs don’t need to wait much longer. Nintendo has released a major update that brings both–as well as a number of other changes–to the 3DS. The update, which is version 7.0.0-13U, came after Nintendo closed the eShop on both the 3DS and Wii U for maintenance.
First and foremost is the installation of Nintendo Network IDs. With this, you can now link eShop balances between the Wii U and 3DS. NNIDs will also be needed to download and play Demos and will track purchases made in the eShop through your ID. Keep in mind that if you delete an ID that you will lose your purchase history as will as the balance that is linked to it. You can have your ID on only one 3DS but it is transferable through a System Transfer to a different 3DS-line product.
Another major installation to come with the NNIDs is Miiverse. Miiverse replaces the Swapnote application as a way to communicate with people. The number of games that use Miiverse are limited right now to 14 titles but should increase as time goes on.
Other notable updates:
- System transfer limits have been removed. The previous limit had been 5 transfers per system.
- Your 3DS will let you know if update data is available for an application when you start the software. SpotPass will need to be enabled to use this.
- The Nintendo 3DS Camera will now start up in the Home Menu after pressing both the L and R buttons together.
- While not part of the main OS update, there is also a StreetPass Mii Plaza update that’s available, numbered v3.3.
