Liberation Maiden 1

Liberation Maiden, the Suda51 and Level 5 3DS turned iOS shooter, is a pretty interesting game. Some people hated the controls and odd concept, while others were charmed by its uniqueness, fun gameplay, and amazing music. In other words, it might not be far off the mark to say that it’s on its way to becoming something of a cult hit in the United States. Our reviewer gave it 4 stars, criticizing its short length and puzzling ending, while praising the production values and gameplay.

It seems that this won’t be the last we hear of it, although not in the way you might expect given the original game’s cliffhanger ending. Liberation Maiden SIN will continue the series as a visual novel for the PS3. The game’s development duties have been handed to 5pb, which is fairly well known within the genre for games like Stein’s Gate and the story behind Bravely Default. Suda51 has assisted some with the scenario, which sees the player as a new character named Kirohito Kaidou. Kirohito is the chief aide under the mech-riding, high school student President Shouko.

As somebody who enjoyed the original game for what it is, it’s a pleasant if unexpected surprise. Liberation Maiden always seemed like it had an extremely interesting world, so seeing more of it is definitely a good thing. The more important question is whether we’re looking at a localization; the original Liberation Maiden seems fairly popular, but was released for a different platform. I’d say a US release seems unlikely, but I’d love to be proven wrong.
