After some strong indiction, then leaked information, then the announcement itself, Square Enix finally does it.

Today Square Enix releases the updated re-released PC version of Final Fantasy VII, now available exclusively on Square Enix’s online store as a digital copy for $11.99.

It may not be an HD remake, but it’s still something.

*Update* The game was pulled from their website, it seems it was a mistake on Square’s part. Thankfully they will give a refund to all those who paid for it. Sorry about that folks.

This version has new features, all which are the following:

■ Cloud Saves – If you’re away from home or simply using a different computer to play, enjoy FINAL FANTASY VII wherever you are. 1. Because FF7 was hard, right?
Nah, the community already had a character hack tool for the PC version back in the day, it’s nice to have a compatible first-party system to mimic it.

    2. I know, right? In the land where savepoints don’t magically heal you, and battles don’t end with an instant status effect cure, what is one to do? Cheat or buy tents, it’s up to you! Be a REAL adventurer 🙂

  1. Can someone confirm whether this thing will support game controllers? Most annoying thing about the previous PC version was having to play the whole thing on a keyboard or joystick.

    1. Hallelujah. The controls on the original PC release were the worst. Why they thought it would be a good idea to map every single control to the numerical pad, I have no idea. I’m pretty sure that they had no idea, either.

  2. Tried to buy, payment type isn’t supported in my area. I understand. The USA is a bit small for digital river to accept mastercard from.

  3. Personally I feel that this is a weak release. I recently sought this game out on Playstation and played through it, and then wrote this article:

Because I’ve already played the game, I feel like purchasing it again for minimal upgrades is kind of silly, and the fact that this version still doesn’t use the original sound from the game as it was intended, it suffers a little bit. I would have gladly paid upwards of $50 if Square Enix decided to do a more generous upgrade.

But, I’m not really in the crowd that is pushing for this game to be remade. I enjoy it as it is on the Playstation. I own that copy and I can still play it. This version is nice, I suppose, for those who can’t simply play it in original form, and can’t bear the original Playstation graphics.

    1. I know some of the practical problems for some of us playing the original PC release are: control layout (not all laptops even support a numpad anymore), the ancient video codec causing problems, the dead Yamaha MIDI bank, and shoddy support for today’s graphics cards. I recently got the original PC version running on my brand new laptop, and it inexplicably had a framerate of about 5fps.

I’m glad this update has come along, to acknowledge the problem of updating the software core to work on modern OSes and hardware. And without CDs and assumptions in the registry that the disk drive is D:

    2. I tend to agree with you. I mean, there really isn’t much here to entice those that have played it 100 times over. I guess they are hoping that the hardcore fans will buy it since they were clamoring for a remake.

But to me it’s like SE said, there, take this, it’s the best we can do.

  4. Considering the PSX port is $9.99 on PSN, I SUPPOSE it’s worth the two extra bucks for the added stuff, but this would seriously be the fifth time purchasing the game (2nd for PC).

    I’m heavily considering it.

  5. Yeah, this requires an online activation. There’s no way in hell I’m buying a DRM-infected game. I’d rather pay full price for the original PC release, which I already have gotten running in 1080p in Windows 7.

  6. Seems like the store page is down. Plus I’ve heard some problems with the DRM not activating properly (probably why the page is down). Shaky start, me no likey.

  7. So yeah, managed to buy it last night. Had to use IE because Digital River doesn’t like Chrome.

Downloaded overnight and woke up early to play. Thank god this game has Securom, because now I will get all my chores done today, as the unlock code/serial number doesn’t work. I am about to just return this crap.
