To Wrap Things Up or to Wait for a Sequel?

Scott MacDonald’s opinion made me go oh, yea! right on! Here he says:

“Whether it’s short and sweet, or a long goodbye, I like an ending that, well, concludes the game’s story. I don’t like obvious cliffhangers because there’s always the chance the game won’t get a sequel; and it’s vexing to spend countless hours in a journey to not reach a conclusion that fits the story. And in terms of multiple endings, I’d prefer one fantastic ending instead of 20 options. I don’t care how amazing your game is, there is simply no way I’ll play it 20 times to see them all. And adding all those options makes it easy to accidentally create plot holes within the story.”

To this I say Scott, some games I will play multiple times but they better be pretty badass and make me have a total blast through the whole thing. If not then I will move on to whatever game I have in my backlog and not look back.

Wrapping Things Up

I will leave you with these gems from various OpRainfall team members regarding game endings.

Oscar Tong:

“Another ending I like despite it not catering to my preferences in a singular yet significant way is the ending of “Terranigma”. That’s all I can say without spoiling the game.”

Charlotte Buckingham:

“I’ve been thinking about this… And as a whole, I prefer endings which tie up the main story. And I prefer them to be a happy ending. I don’t mind if they don’t tie up ALL loose ends, but so long as the main issue is resolved. I like having some things left to the imagination.”

oprainfall owner Richard Ross:

“It’s way too complicated for me to explain…let’s just
say I have an extremely open mind and great imagination, so as long as I can make it make sense, it’s good to me. Also I’m more about the experience to the ending rather than the ending itself.”

My friend Kenzel LaMoyne Jones:

“I prefer endings to be bittersweet and to have MOST questions answered. It’s cool to leave some things open to the mind but no plot holes please.”

oprainfall member James Best:

“I prefer endings that tie things up nicely, while still leaving some room for a possible continuation (take the Prime games for example, they brought their individual plots to end, but still hinted at a sequel at the end of it provided you got 100%), but nothing more than a slight hint, not a full blown cliffhanger.”

My friend Samuel Martin Prezelski:

“I personally prefer games with multiple endings, like Chrono Trigger. Secret endings are also fun, like Demon’s Crest.”

Samuel Martin Prezelski again:

“There’s just something fun about going through the steps of unlocking a certain ending, kind of like the effort put into fighting a certain boss in classic 2d fighters.”

Charlotte Buckingham again:

“Multiple endings are fun. One of the things I like about Fire Emblem is being able to choose who your characters end up with.”

My friend Steven Boaz says this:

“ I like the kind of endings that show the female characters in various states of undress, especially if the entire adventure had them sweating in thick layers of Chozo armor.”

I thought that would be a nice upbeat note to leave you folks with. I think we represent just about every ending and preference to our endings. We here at oprainfall would love to hear from you. Let us know who you agree with and who you don’t agree with. Have a different opinion? Share that as well.

See you next time in Crystal’s Corner!
