Upon slaying Malatesta in the Plane of Anguish, William wanders down a lone hallway adorned with a mirror. The entire game, mirrors are used as save points to record your progress. However, you could never see William’s reflection in any of those mirrors, as they were obscured by a eerie red illumination. I found it odd, but didn’t give it much thought- that is, until the last scene, as William looked into the mirror and found the Doctor staring back at him from it.
I was shocked. The whole time, the Doctor seemed to have possessed a good and evil nature. Now I knew why – the architect of the madness and the man trying to stop it were one and the same. As William was dragged into his reflection by the evil Doctor, I found that this insane solution made me love the character even more. Much as I wanted him to be a hero, William is much more compelling as a monster. I only hope that his duality is explained and further examined in a potential third Dementium title. Until then, he is most definitely my favorite protagonist of any horror game.
