It’s been a while since we’ve heard about the OUYA. With its supposed launch being just a few months from now, the OUYA team made a post on their blog about what they’ve been up to in the past few weeks. Aside from refining the controller, they also teamed up with Kill Screen to host a game jam called CREATE for developers worldwide. Over 166 game prototypes have been made for the OUYA during the ten days the game jam took place.
These prototypes will be judged in a special contest composed of quite a few industry professionals, including Phil Fish, the creator of Fez, Austin Wintory, the composer for Journey, Zach Gage, the creator of SpellTower, and more. Winning prototypes will receive cash prizes, with a bonus prize promised if the developers can finish their game and launch it on OUYA.
Obviously, not all of these prototypes will be made into full games by the OUYA’s launch. And, of course, there’s no telling how good the games will be. That said, I really dig the idea of a game jam like this. I still have high hopes for the system, even after Nintendo has been working hard to demolish barriers for indie developers. Hopefully, this game jam will yield some good results.
