We come to the end of this post with one last category to crown a winner for. That would be for Best Wii Game of 2012. If you know our history, you might guess that it was an epic battle between two titanic swan songs for Nintendo’s best selling home console. Perhaps, but we found four games that rightfully deserve a spot as the Wii’s best game in its last full year as the flagship for Nintendo.

RICHARD: 2012 will go down as the year in which the Wii went out with a bang. Instead of submitting to the fact that the Wii U was incoming, Nintendo was still able to release a few more quality games for the Wii. Here are the nominees for Best Wii Game of 2012. Hopefully we won’t be too predictable…No guarantees.
- Xenoblade Chronicles
December 2nd 2011, Nintendo finally announced that Xenoblade Chronicles was coming to the United States, and would release almost a year after Europe in 2012. Boy was it worth it. Massive worlds, great battle system, likable characters, and an intriguing story kept you playing for days. If there was one game I was happy to receive this year, it was this…FORTUNATELY Xenoblade wasn’t the only RPG on the Wii in 2012.
- The Last Story
A new RPG from the creator of Final Fantasy (Hironobu Sakaguchi) with the composer of all those songs from Final Fantasy you probably can probably hum at any time (Nobuo Uematsu), and published in America by the oh so lovable XSEED Games. What more can you ask for? The Last Story blends old school story telling with a new battle system best described as a cross between Dragon Age and Mass Effect bringing the console RPG a much needed innovation from the old turn-based system. Just make sure to turn off the auto attack!
- Rhythm Heaven Fever
When you find yourself sore from smiling so much from a video game, you know it’s doing something right. Rhythm Heaven Fever is simplistic in design, with only two buttons ever needing being pushed, but that’s what makes it so great! You feel like you’re doing so much even by doing so little. Whether it’s interviewing a luchador or mimicking a monkey playing a tambourine, Rhythm Heaven Fever never stops being fun, and isn’t that why we play games in the first place?
Do you like Cave Story? Do you like Indiana Jones? How about crying because a game is so brutal that it kicks your ass causing you to throw the controller at the wall? If you do, then La-Mulana is for you! La-Mulana was one of WiiWare’s last surprises and definitely one that shouldn’t be missed. Just ask Jonathan Higgins.
AND THE WINNER IS…
Xenoblade Chronicles
I said no guarantees that we wouldn’t be predictable! Seriously, considering who we are, it came down to The Last Story and Xenoblade Chronicles. As much as we absolutely adore The Last Story, Xenoblade Chronicles narrowly beat it out by just doing everything right and practically reinvigorating the JRPG sub-genre. Now that we got that out of the way, I suppose that leaves room for other games to get our game of the year from Nintendo…right?
