At Tokyo Game Show 2026, a special session called Fate/EXTRA Record Behind Closed Door Session was held by Aniplex staff members, giving attendees information on the game such as how the change in publisher impacted its development, how the visuals were produced, Arena gameplay footage, and if the scenario has changed from the original game.
While not all of the information given in the session is recounted in this article, you can read some of the information given below. The full information rundown can be read on Famitsu and Denfaminico Gamer.
- Fate/EXTRA Record‘s concept is a full-fledged RPG aimed not only at Fate fans, but also JRPG fans in general. The developer’s aimed to make an RPG that’s memorable to longtime fans and allows new players to experience Fate/EXTRA.
- For the game’s visuals, the illustrations by character designer Wada Arco were recreated using high-quality anime-style cel shading. In dialog scenes, the illustrations were animated using Spine.
- In terms of the game’s development structure, Aniplex staff mentioned that while TYPE-MOON studio BB was a core member of the planning team, another company handled the actual development work. Meteorise, who is currently credited as developer, was involved prior to the organizational change.
- Since Aniplex has taken over as publisher, nothing has been abandoned, and the game is being developed in line with the original concept. They believe the game will be delivered in the final form they were aiming for.
- The development team has kept the game’s scenario faithful to the original with no changes to iconic lines or other key elements.
- The gameplay system has been overhauled using a card-based battle system and gameplay elements in the Arena. One of these new gameplay elements is called Servant Time, conversation events in the Arena with your Servant that can help deepen your bond with them and raise their stats. These changes were done to make a more rich and engaging experience for JRPG fans.
- Taiga Quests return in Fate/EXTRA Record.
- Information gathering is carried over from the original game, but has been made easier to understand.
- Aniplex staff was asked if further developments would be made for Fate/EXTRA depending on the response to Fate/EXTRA Record (such as a CCC remake or DLC). Aniplex responded that they intend to give it some thought, but nothing has been decided. In the same vein, Noah from Final Weapon asked Aniplex staff if there were any potential plans or discussions on bringing Fate/EXTRA CCC to modern platforms. Similarly, Aniplex responded that any plan for a modern version of the game was “undecided at this time.”
In addition to this information, gameplay footage of Floor 1 and Floor 2 of the Arena were shown. Floor 1 footage featured the Male Protagonist and Saber and mostly focused on the card-based battle system. Floor 2 featured the Female Protagonist and Archer and mostly focused on the Arena gameplay elements. You can check out gameplay footage shared by Famitsu and Denfaminico Gamer below. The footage shared by the two does differ slightly. For example, Floor 1 footage from Denfaminico Gamer shows a fight with Shinji and his Servant while Famitsu footage does not.
