The plot thickens! Smiley finds an old drone in the landfill, but when it wakes up with a lost memory, the Yurei Detectives take up its request to find its lost owner. It turns out our drone – cheekily named Doron – is an illegal model, and whoever created it had something to do with the Phantom Zero Nation Hyperverse game Berry used to play with her friends. During their investigation, Berry gets to know Madam 44 a little bit more and discovers some of the reasons the woman is helping the Detectives out. We also end up with way more questions about the Hyperverse, Phantom Zero, and what’s going on with the Customer Center than when we started. Something dangerous is afoot, but the truth is worth the risk. I’m really curious to see where they’re going with this one. – Leah

Yakuza’s Guide to Babysitting

Yakuza's Guide to Babysitting | oprainfall anime

It’s Yaeka’s birthday, and Kirishima isn’t sure what to get her. Meanwhile, the little lady makes her first friend – a precocious little girl named Sara who also happens to be their new next door neighbor, much to Sakuragi’s chagrin. Compared to previous episodes, this one is really Yaeka-centric, highlighting how lonely she really is and how desperately she wants to have a friend. Sara is a whirlwind of energy who keeps Sugihara and the others on their toes, especially when she and her father, Leon, make a surprise visit to the family home. Sara’s dad is obsessed with Japanese culture and considers Sakuragi a paragon of Japan. It’s probably a good thing Leon doesn’t know his new neighbor is a yakuza boss. Having Sara spend the day with her ends up being a “beautiful encounter” and we get to see Yaeka truly happy for the first time, but Kirishima still has his gift to give. It’s homemade omurice, and it makes Yaeka’s special day even brighter. This was just a really sweet episode and I would love to see more like this. – Leah

Lycoris Recoil

Lycoris Recoil | oprainfall Anime

I pulled a double-header this week and watched episodes 6 and 7.  Episode 6 saw Chisato come head to head against the terrorist behind the Lycoris assaults, Majima. In episode 7, Chisato, after a bunch of sneaking around behind Mika’s back, finds out Mr. Yoshi is the one who saved her life. I found the whole mission to spy on Mika pretty entertaining. The 6th episode was great as we got to see Takina much less serious than she usually is, and how determined she is to defeat Chisato in rock-paper-scissors. It also showed that Chisato is in no ways invincible, as she was losing to Majima in their one-on-one fight. Luckily, Takina and the others came in for the save. Chisato and Majima clearly found rivals in each other, based on their reactions after the fight. The 7th episode had a couple revelations. We learned that Majima was the terrorist that took down the Tokyo radio tower and that Chisato single handedly took him and his crew down, meaning their rivalry must be destined. I’m curious where the series goes from here as Chisato already completed her goal of thanking the one who saved her, but Mr. Yoshi seems still intent on getting her to kill someone. Also, the after credits scene with Majima shows that something big is going down in the next episode. Both episodes were interesting and I look forward to more. – Patrick

Dropkick on My Devil!!! X

Dropkick on My Devil!!! X

With the last two episodes we get Jashin-chan’s old teacher making a new appearance, along with setting her up as being a more reoccurring character. We also get a bit more focus on Lierre with her acting more the part of her current form as a child. My favorites being her battle with Jashin-chan for a panda ride and the desire for a toy at a burger chain. Though, I wouldn’t mind getting the Miku toy they were giving away. We see that Jashin-chan also gets into heavy debt (or a bigger one) and runs away to Hokkaido. The next episode has the group sort of searching for her as Jashin-chan continues to fail there. This episode is a bit of an advertisement for the area which shows off some local stuff. The group finds Jashin-chan who is trying to make money through a cult and Emu theft, and from the looks of it, the next episode will be in the area too. The Miku appearances, like always, were short but good. – Walter

Is It Wrong to Try to Pick Up Girls in a Dungeon? (DanMachi)

DanMachi

Catching up with the last few episodes, we see Bell’s expedition doing quite well. I like the increasing number of characters to the party and the addition of some we’ve seen previously. I do like how the role of some characters have started to change, such as Lilli doing more than previous. Coming off of the last season, I was wondering what the big threat would be in this arc, and the new monster is something interesting. It is definitely not as grandiose as some of the stuff we’ve seen at the moment, but it is quite a big threat with how clever it is. I am curious to see how this arc turns out. – Walter

Overlord

Overlord | Shalltear

The focus of the last two episodes has been Ainz trying to open relations with the kingdom of the dwarfs. It was nice to see how he’s letting some of the other characters take more of a lead. I liked Shalltear getting a good focus on dealing with the issues they’ve come across. In this case, the dwarves are under threat from some invaders, and we got to see some her abilities when getting information. The problems of the dwarves, and their view on Ainz and the others, were an interesting perspective to get. The newest episode ends with Ainz now seemingly setting out for a nearby dragon. This is a bit of a throwback to early on in the series, and I can’t help but like these references. Like always, I’m excited to see how Ainz’s plans will work out. – Walter

Anime of the Past:

The Twelve Kingdoms

The Twelve Kingdoms | oprainfall anime

After binge watching Fushigi Yuugi last week, I was still in the mood for historical fantasy, and The Twelve Kingdoms was one I’d dabbled in previously but hadn’t seen too much of. Another old-school isekai that leans way more heavily into politics than straight fantasy, this one has three people flung into another world instead of the usual one. We have protagonist Youko Nakajima, the “perfect” student and daughter who begins seeing visions of demons and monsters one day at school; Yuka Sugimoto, Youko’s friend who feels resentful toward Youko; and Ikuya Asano, Youko and Yuka’s classmate who Youko likes but he likes Yuka. All three are caught up in events when a man named Keiki shows up at school and tells Youko she has to come with him. After being attacked by demons, the three all show up in what appears to be ancient China, but only Youko can understand the language or speak with the locals. This new world is not unfamiliar with people from Japan, who they call “Kaikyaku” and consider bad luck. Whoops. Unlike Fushigi Yuugi, Youko and company are not welcomed to this new world and aren’t helped along by nobles. Hunted and betrayed repeatedly, they have to fight to survive while also dealing with the underlying frustration and issues between them. It’s definitely a lot darker and denser, but I enjoy that. I’m a huge fan of worldbuilding and Twelve Kingdoms does not relent on that front. The pacing is a bit wonky and you’re thrown into the middle of everything without really understanding the terminology so it can be a bit of a struggle, but there’s a lot here that I find super interesting and really want to learn more. – Leah
