Yoshitaka Amano is not an artist who needs introduction, especially if you’re into anime and video games. The famed painter – who began his work in the1970s with Gatchaman and went on to create Vampire Hunter D and a huge swath of mainline Final Fantasy characters – is no stranger to art exhibits, but the Yoshitaka Amano’s VR Museum is a first for both the creator and his work.
Billed as the “biggest Amano exhibition ever” with more than 100 works of art, the team behind the VR Museum has turned Amano’s artwork into fully-realized 3D models. According to the Kickstarter, it took 3D modelers more than 10,000 hours to have work presentable for the campaign. Amano as well has been hands-on with the project, “from the structures, interiors and lighting of the museum to the details and visuals of the artworks.”
Amano writes:
Dear All,
This is Yoshitaka Amano. First, I’d like to thank you for checking out this project, whether you’ve already supported it or not.
In the past 50 years, I’ve been very blessed to be able to express myself through my works. To receive so much love from people around the world is beyond anything I can ever imagine. I am very thankful, truly.
My style has been deeply influenced by mythology and fantasy; I often imagine a new, mystic universe where all my drawings and creations come to life. To me, art is a place where I can truly be who I am and unleash my imagination, and I’ve been looking for a way to present it to those who appreciate my art.
Now, with this VR Museum, I am more than excited to invite you into my world of wonder.
As of writing, the Kickstarter has blown away its initial $9,951 goal and is sitting at $80,054 with 360 backers and 19 days to go. The Yoshitaka Amano’s VR Museum will be accessible through smartphone, PC, and VR headset.
