We here at oprainfall don’t just love video games: we’re big fans of anime, too. So in celebration of the medium, we’re here to give you our thoughts on what we’ve been watching each week as we watch it. Old, new – anything goes.
Currently Airing:
Mieruko-chan
I started watching Mieruko-chan this week after wanting to for sometime and got through two of the four episodes currently available. I had read a bit of the manga before, so I was interested. The series follows Miko, who’s a normal girl which we see for about half the first episode until the main focus of the series comes in. Miko suddenly is able to see ghosts and spirits that wander around and does her best to not acknowledge them as they attempt to see if she can notice them. This is quite difficult as they are pretty horrifying and show up at random times and places. They also attempt to attach themselves to people, such one occasion with Miko’s always hungry and energetic friend Hana. There are times where her ability to see has a benefit, such as one part in the second episode regarding an ownerless kitten. It’s always good to never judge a book by its cover. While the horror element is pretty apparent with the spirits, there are definitely some comedic moments. It’s a series that I do want to keep following. The opening and ending themes are pretty catchy, too, which are linked below. – Walter
The Great Jahy Will Not Be Defeated!
This week Jahy goes to the beach. Unfortunately, she doesn’t get much chance to relax. While helping at the landlord and manager’s uncles restaurant, it doesn’t take long for her to realize that there most likely is a mana crystal in the area, as she hears of a number of unfortunate things occurring nearby. Her attempts to search are hindered by the landlord mentioning things such as food and not getting paid, but eventually that doesn’t matter anymore. Jahy eventually does find some mana crystals after unintentionally helping many people in need. The other part of the episode follows Druj as she confronts Jahy about some recent changes. Although she is praised by Jahy, she feels unfulfilled as she prefers the cold and insulting way Jahy used to be in the Dark Realm. She mentions how she thinks Jahy has changed and become more human since coming to the human world, something which I think is true. It quickly is remedied by Jahy looking down on her. The episode ends with a nice teaser for next time, where Jahy desires to confront the magical girl. Usually there are a few different stories going on in an episode and this one is split between two. I don’t wanna say I prefer that as there are a number of characters who should get sometime, but it was a nice change. – Walter

86 EIGHTY-SIX (2nd Cour)
In this week’s episode, the large scale Legion offensive Lena was worried about has begun. The Legion attack the Republic and Federacy, as well as surviving nations located to the North and South. For the first time, we get to hear a voice commanding all of the Legion to begin the operation, which I never thought we’d get to hear, so that was pretty cool. Nordlicht Squadron helps fight off the Legion offensive in the Federacy while Lena prepares all of the Eighty-Six to combat the Legion in the Republic. This series just keeps on delivering. I wanted an escalation in action and for Lena to reappear, and I got both in this episode! The combat did not disappoint, with fast-paced mech action and stellar music, it really got my blood pumping. It was great seeing individuals step up in the Republic as they know stuff is really hitting the fan now. I’m interested in seeing whether or not Lena’s preparations will pay off, or if her dreams really will be crushed like her uncle said. All in all, another great episode, and once again, I can’t wait to see what happens next week. – Patrick

Old Shows:
Azumanga Daioh
So after buying myself this absolutely adorable Suiseiseki Nendoroid, I was in a super nostalgic mood, so for this week’s oprainfall anime write-up, I decided to brush off a show I used to watch obsessively way back when. Azumanga Daioh is still probably one of my favorite comedy anime of all time, and even though I hadn’t watched it in years, turning on the first episode again was like coming home. Chiyo-chan is still so earnestly adorable, Sakaki-san still stoic but sweet (and also my favorite), Tomo-chan is ridiculously stupid, and Osaka the airheaded but kind transfer student. The comedic timing of the jokes are all still on point, with great performances from the cast and really charming music, too. If you’ve never seen Azumanga Daioh, this slice-of-life comedy based off a 4koma manga still stands the test of time and is absolutely worth your time. – Leah
