One thing that always catches my interest are tributes to classic genres. Genres like tactical RPG with turn based strategy. I mean, there’s a reason I love series like Fire Emblem so much. And while the latest game revealed at the PC Game Show isn’t from a storied series, it looks no less interesting. It’s called Fae Tactics and developed by Endlessfluff Games, and the first thing that stuck out to me is how gorgeous its use of color is. The game looks like a watercolor painting, reminiscent of Legend of Mana.
The tale of Fae Tactics revolves around young hero Peony, a girl who may or may not destroy the world. She summons adorable creatures called fae to battle for her, kind of a mixture between Final Fantasy Tactics and Pokémon. Combat seems to involve the usual sword and sorcery mix, along with an interesting looking combo system. And did I mention the beautiful art also translates to the pixelated character models? The enemies are especially daunting looking.
Here’s a glimpse of the plot of the game, and some key features:
In Fae Tactics, follow a young magic user named Peony on her journey across a vibrant world full of mystery and danger. Summon allies, cast spells, and befriend a motley crew of characters as you dive into the growing conflicts between man and magical beings known as fae.
Long ago the world of magic was separated from the natural world by Elemental Gates. One day the seal on the gates was broken, flooding the natural world with magical fae creatures once thought to be myths. The worlds merging was imperfect and much of the land was torn apart. The devastation claimed the lives of most of the population of natural and fae creatures alike. Those that survived have forged new lives in the ruins of the old worlds, but growing tension between man and fae threaten to finish what began with the opening of the gates.
