Games Done Quick announced today that they have cancelled the on-site Summer Games Done Quick 2020 event to do an online event instead. The original event was to take place in Bloomington, Minnesota. According to the press release, the new online version of the event is scheduled to take place from August 16th through August 23rd on the Games Done Quick Twitch channel. This announcement comes amid the COVID-19 pandemic, and in the interest of adhering to Minnesota’s state guidelines with regard to limiting its spread. Games Done Quick Director of Marketing and Business Development, Kasumi Yogi, put out the following comments on the change in their plans:
“We would like to thank the community for its patience while we were figuring out the best way to proceed with Summer Games Done Quick 2020. We’re excited to continue showcasing some of the most talented speedrunners in the world while observing best practices to keep everyone safe in the midst of a global pandemic.”
Games Done Quick has raised a total of more than $26 million dollars for charities all over the globe since 2010. These include names like:
- AbleGamers
- Direct Relief
- Doctors Without Borders / Médecins Sans Frontières
- Organization for Autism Research
- and the Prevent Cancer Foundation
Doctors Without Borders Fundraising Manager, Jeremy Wells, has also commented on this situation, saying:
“We are extremely excited that SGDQ will be held online this year. We’ll be able to keep up the momentum of MSF’s biggest annual global fundraiser, while also acknowledging the challenges we are all facing during these unprecedented times. See you online in August!”
