It’s been nearly a week since the tragic events of July 18th which claimed the lives of 34 Kyoto Animation staff members. During the past week, a sea of fan art, supportive messages, and charitable donations have been sent to the studio in hopes of offering support. Up to this point, most monetary donations have been made through physical donation boxes and via a GoFundMe campaign created by Sentai Filmworks. Late yesterday, it was reported by the NHK that Kyoto Animation would begin accepting direct deposit donations as well. An official statement from the studio offers an apology for the delay in making the direct deposit information available and also expresses thanks to the community for its “voices of support from all around the world”. From this point forward, Kyoto Animation has indicated three ways in which donations will be handled.
- Money raised will be given to the victims and their families to help alleviate costs as well as reconstruct the company.
- Usage of all donations will be transparent. Reports on where the money is going will be provided once all decisions have been made.
- All third-party fundraising will be posted to Kyoto Animation’s website
Finally, the studio has amended one of its earlier statements and has requested that police and media outlets not release the names of victims at this time. It was also indicated that there are no plans to release any of those identities until investigations conclude.
