How has it been 4 years since the last Making It Rainfall? It feels like just yesterday I was making tons and tons of levels in Super Mario Maker and sharing them with you good folks. But much as I loved the game, after time I found myself spending less time with it, and really wanted a more portable Mario Maker. Fast forward 4 short years later, and we finally got it on Nintendo Switch. I’m a big fan of Super Mario Maker 2, and love the sheer volume of new tools at my disposal. And while there’s less writers tackling Making It Rainfall now, that doesn’t mean it’s any less entertaining. So join me and my colleague Michael as we share our first batch of stages for Super Mario Maker 2. And since so many of us have been suffering from heatwaves worldwide, let’s cool off with some snow and ice themed stages.
Josh’s Levels
Level 1 – Icy Night
Course ID – 7YX-6VC-VGF
I’ve found that my levels tend to be more of obstacle courses. There’s one way to play, optional goals and it’s all about reflexes and timing. Icy Night is a good example of that. There’s lots of slick surfaces, flying foes and unexpected threats. Your primary goal is to walk carefully and aim for all 45 coins, though you’re certainly allowed to just race to the finish. Just be careful of those icicles, cause they are very good at killing your momentum.
Level 2 – Frozen Pipes
Course ID – M1K-7YW-3SG
This was actually my first 3D World stage attempt. I figured I could find a way to incorporate novel features into an interesting ice level, and here’s what happened. I kind of went nuts with the clear pipes. There’s a bit of a small maze element to the stage, though fear not, there’s also plenty of my usual obstacle course fun. If you find yourself brimming with bravery, try your best to get all the big coins in the stage. Just watch out for Piranha Plants and try not to slip as you hunt for delicious bling!

Level 3 – Snowy Mountain Climb
Course ID – KDW-13K-VLG
Mario must climb to the top of the snowy mountain and face its ruler, Boom Boom, at the summit. There are several hidden 1-Ups, and large coins. Can you find the 50 coin?
I found this level started slow and ramped up nicely. There’s a lot of challenge here, but also a lot more room to explore. Michael definitely favors giving players lots of assistance. That said, there’s no shortage of challenge here. I personally really liked how this stage incorporates Builder Mario, especially his clever use of hammers and block placement to find goodies.
Level 4 – Enter The Ice Caves
Course ID – C9K-DWL-8TG
You must find the entrance to the ice caves and explore them. Mario may find an old friend along the way. This level has a number of 1-Ups hiding in it, and there are also 5 optional pink coins that unlock a secret area.
I really enjoyed this stage. It was a large one, for sure, but only if you want to explore. Plus, any stage with Yoshi in it is instantly better. Lots of fun new gimmicks here too, like cranes. Also, fun fact, Yoshi can turn Dry Bones into a bone fireball of sorts, which I discovered pretty quickly. A fun stage, and one that reminds me fondly of Yoshi’s Island.
Not a bad return to form, eh? Thanks for checking out oprainfall’s latest Making It Rainfall stages, and tune in the 2nd week of August for the next Making It Rainfall installment, before a prolonged PAX West interruption.
Many thanks to Brandon R. for the awesome featured image!
