It’s a concern that I hear voiced way to often everyday- “I have an application that needs to access a large volume of information about video games and I have nowhere to turn to”. If you’re a developer and find yourself asking that question, fear not. RAWG is here to help you address that concern. RAWG is a game discovery service with a database housing the world’s largest collection of video game related data. This massive collection contains information on over 300K games including over 2 million screenshots and 400K reviews/ratings. Direct access to the database is now possible through the use of an API released by the RAWG team. Its different functions include the ability to search any game in the database by name, obtain detailed information about it, and find more games like it. That last feature is possible thanks to RAWG’s machine learning algorithm which analyzes in-game content and helps suggest similar games based on that content. Some popular applications are already making use of this API such as the Reddit games recommendations bot (50K users) and the PikaGirl Discord bot (30K users).
For those who find the concept of this database interesting but don’t possess the skills necessary to use the new API, you can always visit the RAWG website and perform the same search functions from there. RAWG also has two bots created by some of their employees. These include the Telegram bot and the DTF bot, both of which perform searches against this database. For more information about the new API and the rules associated with using it, have a look at the provided documentation on the RAWG website. Also, please let us know in the comments below if you can think of any other cool uses for this.
