The complete Shovel Knight: Treasure Trove will launch at retail in April 2019, Yatch Club Games announced. At the same time the Treasure Trove re-launches in stores, a trove of new Shovel Knight content will be launching, including its final two expansions, the long-awaited King of Cards campaign and a new multiplayer mode Shovel Knight Showdown.
Most pertinently, Shovel Knight Showdown was revealed exclusively by IGN this week as yet another play mode. Showdown plays much like an 8-bit variation on the Smash Bros. concept, collecting Shovel Knight and every boss character from the main game to duke it out to the last knight. Each of the 16 playable characters has their own story mode pathway, including a brand-new final boss. Up to four players can compete together, fight one-on-one, or take on the AI.
Only the console releases of Shovel Knight will have access to Showdown, with both handheld versions on Vita and 3DS excluded from this mode.
The retail release of Shovel Knight: Treasure Trove, the trio of new amiibo, Showdown, and King of Cards launch in tandem on April 9th, 2019. North America and Europe will have the retail version of Treasure Trove across PS4 and Switch (no Xbox One, Vita, or 3DS versions). The physical package will retail for $39.99 USD and equivalents, while the digital version retains its $24.99 USD price. Ever as before, the new add-on modes will be free for digital owners of the Treasure Trove.
The trio of new Shovel Knight amiibo, including Plague Knight, Specter Knight, and King Knight, were announced way back in September 2017 and are still up for pre-order at Amazon and GameStop and run for $34.99 USD.
This final wave of add-on content wraps up a five year journey for Shovel Knight‘s inaugural game. The retro love child project of developer Yatch Club Games, Shovel Knight launched its successful Kickstarter campaign back in 2013, launching in 2014 on PC, Wii U, and 3DS before gradually expanding to other platforms. The studio has made great success out of their knightly mascot, who has made multiple cameos in other indie titles, merchandise, and more.
All in all, Shovel Knight: Treasure Trove will include the original titular character’s campaign, Plague of Shadows, Specter of Torment, King of Cards, and Shovel Knight Showdown. There’s no telling where the studio will take their flagship character next year following the final two pieces of add-on content.
