Unity is a popular video game engine used in many indie games, but at GDC 2016 it was utilized for a completely different field: animation. The Gift is an animated short film made by Marza Animation Planet Inc., an animation company created by none other than Sega. Using the “Marza Movie Pipeline for Unity,” The Gift is able to achieve an impressive amount of detail with expressive characters and vibrant settings. The story of The Gift is about a young girl who crafts a present for her parents, but when she attempts to give it to them she stumbles on them having an argument. With the help of her stuffed toy and an overactive imagination, she pushes herself forward. It’s a cute little film that shows of just what’s possible using Unity in this way.
