This past weekend’s NicoNico ChoKaigi in Japan has been quite eventful. From a Pokken Tournament character reveal, to more media on The Great Ace Attorney, and of course the Super Smash Bros. Wii U World Grand Prix. Namco Bandai revealed a new character for Tekken 7 – Gigas, an imposing piece of work. It’s not apparent what or who Gigas is — is Gigas even human?
Gigas’ fighting style doesn’t seem to be inspired from any established form and we certainly can’t tell what Gigas’ nationality is. A news post on the official Tekken website is also scant on details: data on Gigas’ nationality is deleted, and Gigas’ fighting style is described as “destructive impulse.” Based on the character announcement video, some of Gigas’ attacks knock back the opponent quite far even when they’re blocking. Maybe stages with walls could be helpful for this character, so as to minimize the opponent’s mobility options?
As the Tekken franchise moves towards introducing more characters with unconventional and sometimes controversial designs, including those that eschew traditional martial arts forms or feature ostentatious outfits, Gigas is sure to be an interesting addition to the Tekken family of characters.
Gigas will be making an appearance as a playable character in Japanese arcades on April 28th – considering how far ahead Japan’s time zone is compared to the West, we can be sure that Japanese players will be able to check out Gigas very soon.
When Tekken 7 releases for PlayStation 4, expect to see 24 characters initially available. Check out the trailer for Gigas below!
