Yacht Club Games has announced that Shovel Knight: Plague of Shadows (the first expansion for their indie hit, Shovel Knight) will be released as a free DLC. Though they have not yet announced a release date, the Plague of Shadows expansion will be playable at PAX East. In this expansion, you will take on the role of Plague Knight, on a quest to concoct the ultimate potion (Serum Supernus). To do this, Plague Knight must acquire the necessary ingredients, which must be extracted from his former allies (The Knights of No Quarter).
In this new adventure as Plague Knight, you will have new abilities such as explosives, bomb jumping, and alchemy. The new alchemy system allows you to collect loot and craft both equipment and power-ups. You can also collect new recipes and reagents. The expansion adds new enemies, bosses, new areas and new paths through classic levels. Shovel Knight: Plague of Shadows also adds new achievements (known as Feats in-game) that are specific to Plague Knight.
No doubt many of you have played Shovel Knight already and experienced its old-school charm. From the very well-done 8-bit graphics to the awesome sound track, it is full of nostalgia. It has some old school difficulty too, though not as insane as some games of the NES era were. Let’s face it, some games of that era were pretty crazy (like Ghosts & Goblins and many others).
Shovel Knight: Plague of Shadow is looking to be a rather meaty expansion to the game. The fact that it is going to be a free DLC is a very pleasant surprise for Shovel Knight fans. While there is no specific release date for it just yet (it’s listed as Q2 2015), this may change sometime in the not-too-distant future. In the meantime, you probably still have plenty of achievements to go for until the Plague of Shadows expansion comes out. And don’t forget about New Game+!
