In anticipation of the release of the prequel title for the long-running Yakuza series, Sony is releasing special Yakuza-themed PlayStation 4 systems, Vitas and PlayStation TVs.
The Special Edition PlayStation TV sports an art design in the form of a dragon, the same as the tattoo that the series’ main protagonist, Kazuma Kiryu, wears on his back. This will be selling for 16,280 yen (about $140). The Special Edition Vita (which comes in both black and white) has this design, as well. Additionally, the handle portion of the Vita features an added design in the shape of a demonic face, the same as the back tattoo worn by Kiryu’s rival, Goro Majima. This will be going for 20,980 yen (about $180). For the PS4, consumers can choose either a black or white model, as well as either the dragon or demon design. These special PS4s will sell for 41,980 yen (about $360).
Pre-orders for these systems are available on the Sony Store. The Special Edition Vita and PlayStation TV will be releasing on February 26, the same day as a Yakuza 0 companion app. The special PS4 will hit store shelves on March 12, the same day as the release of the game itself. Whether or not such an offer will be available outside Japan… Well, I’m not holding my breath.
I do have hope that we may see the game itself eventually localized, however. With the news of SEGA’s plans to localize Yakuza 5, it seems as though they’re prepared to give the series another chance in the West. It may just be a pipe dream, but perhaps, if it sells well enough, we may yet see this prequel on American and European shores.
