I do want to say I know this is slightly overdue, but I thoughtI might as well wait until I have more answers before posting my thoughts on this show. I’m very glad I did too! As I mentioned on Episode 1, it takes me at least 3 episodes into an anime to get a feel for if I will be enjoying a show. Three episodes into this, we were midway into the first arc of the show and I decided to go ahead and wait to make sure it was going to be worth it. I’m very glad I did, otherwise this post would have been quiet different. Let’s start off with episode 2!
Celestial Method Episode 2 – Their Promise
We started off the second episode with the ever amusing gag that our main character, Nonoka, doesn’t realize she is starting school that day. It’s a classic and I love it. I am glad, however, they decided to leave out the eating bread while running bit or the bumping into the love interest part. Nonoka meets the other characters more completely this time around and everyone is introduced.
She becomes friends with her old friends Shiiharu Kotaru and Mizusaka Yuzuki. Yuzuki and her hate of the saucer in the sky are the main focus of this episode, however. Forceful and bullheaded, Yuzuki ends up dragging Nonoka around town protesting the saucer and pretty much alienating everyone she comes in contact with. Her twin brother, Mizusaka Souta, is on bad terms with her, and it seems like her only friend is Kotaru. With her reasoning left unexplained, Yuzuki comes off as stubborn and simpleminded to the point that her own brother seems to be always apologizing for her.
In between being dragged around town, Nonoka realizes that while she doesn’t understand the reason for Yuzuki’s pigheadedness, she wants to be her friend and help her out. Even though Yuzuki was going about getting rid of the saucer wrong, it was clear it meant a lot to her. I might not like how she went about it but it’s clear that the character herself is well thought out and interesting. Yuzuki isn’t just stubborn, she’s also cheerful and tries her best and your can see that. Again, there’s no exposition.
We were also introduced to Koharu, but she didn’t have much screen time. She seems sweet and soft spoken, pretty much Yuzuki’s opposite. She both lives and works at the gift shop that deals with tourism for the saucer and it’s clear she tries her best and does what’s expected of her. She seems pretty used to Yuzuki’s selfish demands and doesn’t seem concerned when Nonoka is dragged off. Later in the episode, she makes it clear she doesn’t like Yuzuki protesting outside of her family’s shop, but it’s clear this has happened quite a bit.
The episode wrapped up with Nonoka agreeing to support Yuzuki but not really understanding why she is so passionate about the saucer. Personally I don’t think there was enough Noel in the episode but I have a feeling I will always feel like that.
One thing I’m loving about this anime so far is the focus on relationships. It feels natural and un-rushed, which is both good and bad. Good since the characters are interesting and not simple, but bad since I have to wait a week to see what happens next! Next episode I’m hoping we are left with more answers than question marks!
