Sega has announced plans to release a stereoscopic 3D version of the original Sonic the Hedgehog for the 3DS eShop in Japan. This is just the latest in Sega’s 3D remakes, which includes 3D Space Harrier and 3D Super Hang-On. So, for lack of a better name, I will tentatively call it 3D Sonic the Hedgehog.

This version will have quite a few new options. One, you can use the Spin Dash move from Sonic 2, although you can turn this off if you’re a purist. Two, you can play either the original Japanese version or the North American version. Three, you can emulate the audio from both the Genesis Model 1 and Model 2 units (I didn’t know that the audio on the Model 1 and Model 2 was different). Four, it will include save states. Five, you can switch between normal mode and CRT mode. I’m not sure why you’d want to, though. I mean, just look at the screen shots.

The only news that’s shocking, is that 3D Sonic the Hedgehog is only announced for Japan. It seems like it would be fairly easy to localize. You just have to translate some buttons for the options menu, and BOOM! it’s ready for North American and European consumption.

I can almost understand these menus without English.
