In the March 26, 2026 issue of Weekly Famitsu (No.1939/on sale March 12, 2026), Famitsu published a four-page interview with Nihon Falcom President, Toshihiro Kondo. In the interview, multiple topics were talked about including Kyoto XanaduTrails in the Sky 2nd Chapter, the latest Ys game, the inner workings of the company, and the future of the Trails series.

In regards to the Trails series, President Kondo revealed that they’re aiming to release the series’ final installment during the company’s 50th anniversary (2031) and they already have an idea on what the final protagonist’s occupation will be. They then aim to conclude the series the following year (2032). President Kondo also revealed that the plot for the sequel to Kai no Kiseki (Trails beyond the Horizon) is complete and they have decided on the ending for the Trails series.

Q: It may be a bit premature but with the 50th anniversary milestone approaching, could you share Falcom’s medium-long term goals and outlook for the future?

K: Whether the Kiseki series will be finished or not… well that remains uncertain. (laughs) Ideally, we’re aiming to release the final installment during the 50th anniversary and aim to bring the series to its conclusion within our 51st year. To that end, the scenario for Kai no Kiseki 2 has already been completed and the ending of the series decided. And even more so, we have an idea of what the protagonist will be so right now we’re just waiting on the green light to go full steam ahead. But before then, we needed to take a breather and reaffirm our resolve– which is why the Trails in the Sky remake was necessary.

Some other pieces of information from the interview that may be of note:

  • It was considered rewriting Trails in the Sky 1st Chapter, but the staff was adamant in preserving the original work, so the story was left as-is. No changes being made to the story of Trails in the Sky 2nd Chapter.
  • Recording for Trails in the Sky 2nd Chapter‘s “Silver Will, Golden Wings” is complete.
  • Kyoto Xanadu is primarily being handled by newer staff. Development staff from Tokyo Xanadu are supporting the project.
  • Full-scale development of the next Ys title scheduled to begin this Spring. Next installment to focus on Adol at an age above 24.

The Trails series is a long-running RPG series developed by Nihon Falcom which first started in 2004 with the release of The Legend of Heroes: Trails in the Sky. A total of 14 titles are available now, with a remake of the second game set to release in Fall 2026. There is much more to the interview than what is mentioned in this article, so I do recommend reading it. You can check out the full interview (translated by nine) HERE.
