I decided to take a look at an upcoming release from the fine folks at JAST called Neko Night. This is the second release from developer Chaos-L, their first being Meteor Pendulum Heart which released in 2021. Neko Night is a nukige title that features two adorable cat girls and uses some ASMR to really immerse you in the story. ASMR streams have become a popular go-to for some VTubers, so I was curious to see how well this would work out in a visual novel. Let’s dig into this and see if these two cute cat girls can steal my heart.

Neko Night | Girls

The story here follows a self insert protagonist that is having a bit of trouble at his writing job. He is supposed to write a story about his first sexual encounter, but there is one big problem, he’s a virgin. This will soon change when a strange cat girl visits him late one night. Her name is Vanille, and she is very happy to see the protagonist, and insists she is sent to him from God because of her wish. There is a condition to this wish, however, she needs to give birth to a child. If you’ve read any good nukige you know where this is going, and after a night of bliss with Vanille, our friend meets another amazing cat girl the next day named Nera. She is here for the same reasons as Vanille and will need to be with child as part of her wish. Our protagonist thinks he is living in a dream with these two amazing girls, but he can’t help but feel he knows them from somewhere.

Neko Night | Vanille Door

The story here isn’t that deep, but it’s entertaining, and that’s what you really want out of a nukige title. The girls have very different personalities. Vanille is very outgoing and playful, while Nera is much more reserved and serious. She is easily embarrassed and, to me, comes off as a bit of a tsundere. There are three different endings you can obtain via the few choices the game has to offer. I thought each ending was very well done, and the true ending, while not shocking, does a good job closing up the story.

Neko Night | Nera

The artwork in Neko Night is top tier. Each of the girls are highly detailed with some amazing facial expressions that really immerse you in the scenes. Most of the CG here is from the H-scenes, and there are 10 very high quality ones here for players to enjoy. I thought it was neat how you could move the camera around these and explore the finer details of each one as the scenes play out. The backgrounds here are nothing special, but they get the job done. Overall, you can tell the focus here was on the girls and the H-scene CG’s, which is what any good title in this genre should do.

Neko Night | Paradise

Where Neko Night really shines is in the sound design. The game incorporates some ASMR into the gameplay which really enhances the atmosphere. ASMR, for those that don’t know, are low sounds that are meant to stimulate the listener. I’ve heard some folks refer to this as “Ear Porn,” and while it can be used in other ways, in this case that is very fitting. During the H-scenes, the girls will make many low sounds and whispers that really amp up how each scene plays out. I would’ve never thought sounds would make this much of a difference, but when used correctly they certainly can. The game also uses stereo effects to convey the girls’ location. If the girl speaking is on the right, her voice will only be heard out of the right audio channel.

Nexo Night | Fun Times

All these technical features would be for nothing without an amazing voice cast, and they deliver here. Both of the girls’ voice actresses do an amazing job bringing these characters to life and use the ASMR to its fullest during the naughty scenes. I went into this not really knowing what to expect, but I am very impressed with how it turned out. I do suggest a decent pair of headphones to take advantage of all the audio has to offer here.

Overall, I had a really good time with Neko Night. I fell in love with both of these amazing cat girls instantly. They both have a lot of personality and play off of each other really well. The artwork is fantastic, and the audio design makes the H-scenes here very high quality and unique. The game will launch at a sale price of $16.99 which I feel is worth it for the level of quality found here. This may not be the longest nukige you will play this year at around 3 hours in length, but I can safely say it will be one of the best ones.
