Well folks, I have good news and bad news for you. The good news is, today you can check out the latest Making It Rainfall, oprainfall’s ongoing Super Mario Maker 2 inspired series of fan made levels. The bad news is, one of our regular contributors, Ken, had a snafu with his Switch, and thus was unable to submit any selections this week. Furthermore, it might be a little while til he can get his system repaired, so after this Making It Rainfall, we’ll be on temporary hiatus until that happens. But I hope you’ll agree that even though this installment is a little light, Font and I made up for it with some really creative offerings.

Font’s Levels

Level 1 – Mechakoopa Refinery
Course ID – W00-QC1-XPG

Making It Rainfall | Mechakoopa Refinery 1

Mario must battle his way through the Koopa refinery, which is guarded by a plentiful force of Mechakoopas. Once he escapes the flooded area, he’ll have to watch out for some dangerous projectile weapons aiming in his direction, as he traverses the higher areas of the refinery! There are three 50 coins to find in this level, and a few 1-Ups hiding around as well.

I absolutely adore the design of this level. It easily is the most aesthetically pleasing Making It Rainfall level from Font this week, at least in my not so humble opinion. It’s a twisted quagmire of pipes, water and Mechakoopa threats. The first part has you using the Frog Suit to swim through some murky water, while the second has you nab a leaf to become Raccoon Mario and avoid projectile spewing Mechakoopa. And cause this is designed by Font, there’s a diabolical section that has you use Bob-Ombs to break the way forward while avoiding said projectiles. It’s a lot of fun, but the second half is much harder.

Level 2 – Mechakoopa Airforce
Course ID – HX9-Q3V-RMF

Making It Rainfall | Mechakoopa Airforce 1

Mario must ascend the desert cliffs to reach the Mechakoopa airforce. A few guards will try to stop him along the way. Once he gets up there, things are still relatively calm until suddenly they unleash their full force against him! There are three 50-coins hidden in this level to find, and a few 1-Ups also hiding here and there.

Though I liked this level, it starts kind of slow. The desert section is pretty basic platforming, and then you get to the airforce proper. Then you have to avoid buzz saw blades and Mechakoopa on conveyor belts. It’s pretty harrowing, but you can survive if you’re careful. Another fun level, but with more of a bite.

Level 3 – Mines of Mechakoopa
Course ID – C2M-RB0-2MF

Making It Rainfall | Mines of Mechakoopa 1

Mario will have to make his way through the treacherous mines to reach the Mechakoopa boss. He will attempt to blow you up with his giant rockets before you can escape. You’ll have to find a way to use his rockets to gain access to the pink coins he barricaded just beyond your reach. There are three hidden 50-coins to find, and some 1-Ups hiding around as usual.

This level showcases what Font does best – making elaborate and tricky levels. This particular one emphasizes that attention to detail with some tricky puzzles. You’ll really use those Mechakoopa in clever ways, but you’ll also need to run from some stacked foes. The only section I had some trouble with is the mini boss fight against a neverending swarm of Red Mechakoopa, which forces you to use his giant missiles to blow open walls and reach the red coins. Other than that, it’s another great Making It Rainfall submission.

Level 4 – Aerial Factory
Course ID – 95T-HCG-NDF

Making It Rainfall | Aerial Factory 1

Grab enough red coins to escape the flying Mechakoopa factory!

I was trying for something a bit different than my usual fare, so this is a bit of an escape room. The first part of the level has you avoiding an airship full of pain, while the second has you navigate a pitch black gauntlet to gather red coins. I had the bright idea to make the only light source be the lightning from Blue Mechakoopa. That said, this Making It Rainfall level isn’t all that hard, just a little tricky the first time through.

Level 5 – Mecha Playpen
Course ID – 7BJ-F34-C1H

Making It Rainfall | Mecha Playpen 1

An army of Mechakoopa stand between you and Jr. Try and grab hidden 1-Ups!

I wanted to go all out with this level, so I made it a tricky airship full of dangerous Mechakoopa and other traps. There’s some hidden 1-Ups to help, and you might need them. The boss battle against Jr. is actually pretty challenging, since he brought some mechanical help along with him. One of my more ambitious designs.

Level 6 – Cloud Run
Course ID – K5F-2WJ-4PG

Making It Rainfall | Cloud Run 1

Jog through the skies while avoiding dangerous ships and traps!

Last but not least we have Cloud Run. I know I said I went all out with the last one, but this is probably harder. It’s a slowly scrolling stage, and Bowser is trying his hardest to crush you. An entire fleet flies just overhead, launching cannonballs, gouts of fire, and many Mechakoopa. I did relent a bit and threw a mid stage flag in to help out, but this is a challenging one. But if you like a bit of spice in your Making It Rainfall, this won’t disappoint.

Overall, I’m pretty happy with this week’s levels. Sorry about Ken, but hopefully the next time he’ll be back with some great ideas. Stay tuned to oprainfall, just don’t expect Making It Rainfall to be back in the coming months.
