Anime NYC has announced that they are partnering with GKIDS Films to host the east coast premiere of Makoto Shinkai’s Weathering With You film. The film will serve as the convention’s closing film.
The east coast premiere of Weathering With You will take place on Sunday, November 17 at 3 pm. It will take place in the Special Events Hall at the Javits Center during Anime NYC 2019. The hall will have seating for 2000+ people and Anime NYC will begin accepting RSVPs to the event starting in early November. An Anime NYC weekend or Sunday badge will be required to attend the premiere, but there is no other additional cost to watch the film. The film will screen exactly 2 months later in North American theaters starting on January 17, 2020.
GKIDS Films describes the movie as follows:
The summer of his high school freshman year, Hodaka runs away from his remote island home to Tokyo, and quickly finds himself pushed to his financial and personal limits. The weather is unusually gloomy and rainy every day, as if to suggest his future. He lives his days in isolation, but finally finds work as a writer for a mysterious occult magazine. Then one day, Hodaka meets Hina on a busy street corner. This bright and strong-willed girl possesses a strange and wonderful ability: the power to stop the rain and clear the sky…
Weathering With You is the latest film by Makoto Shinkai, known by many anime fans as the director of Your Name. The film is the 13th highest grossing film of all time in Japan and is also Japan’s official submission for Best International Film at the 92nd Academy Awards.
