It’s that time once again when we here at oprainfall duke it out in a series of polls and prayers to see what games were the best in 2018. This award is for the best Mulitplatform Game of 2018! Competition in this one was fierce, since platform exclusives grow fewer and fewer each year. Without further ado, let’s see what games we thought were the best of the best.
Soul Cailbur VI
NA Release Date: October 19th, 2018
Platform(s): PC, PlayStation 4, XBox One
Review
This year saw the return of Soul Calibur with the franchise’s 6th entry. Bandai put all theirs eggs in one basket on this one, since if it didn’t sell well the series would’ve been shelved forever. Thankfully the team listened to the fans and gave them exactly the fighting game they wanted. The mechanics have been much improved from the previous title, a more robust story mode was added and the ability for players to create their own fighter was great as always.
Dragon Quest XI
NA Release Date: October 19th, 2018
Platform(s): PC, PlayStation 4
Review
The Dragon Quest franchise has been around for many years. I remember playing the original Dragon Quest (Dragon Warrior) on my NES when I was a very young lad and it was one of the games that made me fall in love with RPGs early on. Dragon Quest X was an online only game that never made its way to the West, so when Dragon Quest XI was announced it would be making it way westward fans were very pleased. While the wait was long they got one of the best titles in the series. It boasted amazing visuals in that Toriyama Style, random encounters were replaced with seeing your foes on the map, and the story was top notch as well. It’s easy to see how this one made our list of favorites this year with all this going for it!
Valkyria Chronicles 4
NA Release Date: September 25th, 2018
Platform(s): PC, PlayStation 4, Switch, XBox One
Review
The Valkyria franchise has had some highs and lows here in the West. The initial game was a break out hit for SEGA with its blend of Strategy and Action gaming with an amazing soundtrack and story. The sequel on the PSP wasn’t nearly as well received as it just didn’t resonate with fans as well as the first game. We missed out on Valkyria Chronicles 3. Some would argue this is the best game in the franchise, and then they went a different way with Valkryia Revolution and it tanked. Thankfully SEGA decided to give the franchise another chance with Valkyria Chronicles 4. This entry came roaring back into action with improved combat and a new cast of crazy characters to follow as they battle the evil empire. The game’s touted Canvas Engine really brought the watercolor graphics into play and this one is just a joy to play.
Mega Man 11
NA Release Date: October 2nd, 2018
Platform(s): PC, PlayStation 4, Switch, XBox One
Review
Mega Man fans have been starved for a new title for many years. A knock off was released in 2016, but sometimes you just can’t beat the real deal. Capcom finally came through for fans in 2018 and announced the release of an all new title. Mega Man 11 featured an all story and robot masters to conquer along with some new gameplay systems. The Double Gear system dramatically changed how you played, and made the game much more strategic. This title was well received by fans and newcomers alike, so let’s hope Capcom doesn’t keep the fans waiting for the next adventure of the Blue Bomber!!
And the winner is…
Valkyria Chronicles 4
War may be hell but it’s also our choice for Mulitplatform Game of the Year! This was great return to form for the series and I think most fans can’t wait get back on the battlefield for more very soon.
