Last night’s Nintendo Direct confirmed that Mario Tennis Aces‘ next batch of content will launch later this month via update 2.0. The update brings forth four new playable characters, new online co-op missions, and more.
Birdo! Shy Guy! Koopa Paratroopa! Petey Piranha! This motley crew will all join the game as playable characters in #MarioTennis Aces. The free Ver. 2.0 update on 9/19 will also add a new Co-op Challenge mode that lets you participate in limited-time missions with friends! pic.twitter.com/sir5HikaBO

The four characters to be added are Birdo, Shy Guy, Paratrooper, and Petey Piranha. All can be unlocked through online tournaments, which requires the Nintendo Switch Online service (coincidentally going live just before this game update).
Online co-op missions will also be added via a Co-Op Challenge Mode. These limited-time missions reward players with new gear and color variants for the game’s cast.
More characters and other forms of content updates are promised until the end of June 2019. This is in stark contrast to 2015’s Mario Tennis: Ultra Smash, which launched as a spartan package with no post-release support. The 2.0 update for Mario Tennis Aces goes live on September 19th.
