Today Sega had a livestream celebration for Sonic’s 25th anniversary, during which they dropped quite the bombshell. Sega announced a new 2D Sonic game inspired by the old classics titled Sonic Mania. Based on the short trailer it very much looks the part. It only gives a small glimpse of Mania’s gameplay, but it does confirm that Sonic, Tails, and Knuckles are all playable.

Sega has tried multiple times throughout the years to return the franchise to its roots with mixed results. Only time can tell if Sonic Mania will be the game many fans have been waiting for.

Here’s the teaser trailer:

About Aaron Evangelisti

Aaron is a lifelong video games enthusiast who's been playing since the days of the NES. He enjoys just about all types of games from RPGs, to platformers, to strategy. He also fancies himself a bit of a writer so writing about video games makes sense, right?

    Pretty hyped for this!

  • Mr0303

Looks pretty good. The drop dash could make the gameplay really fluid. Day 1 for me.

This is being done by the same guy that did the Mobile/PC remasters of Sonic 1, 2, and CD. Rest assured that it will play well. As long as the level design is sound, this should be the best 2D Sonic game since Sonic 3 and Knuckles.
