Following the events that led to Gawker filing for bankruptcy earlier today, Ziff Davis, owner of IGN, has announced that they have bought Gawker Media Group.

The price has not yet been confirmed, but it’s been reported that Ziff paid less than $100 million. This buyout includes all of Gawker Media Group’s assets, including, Kutaku.

Gawker has reported that they are in debt between $100 million and $500 million, and only own between $50 million and $100 million of assets.

Gawker’s large amount of debt comes from the loss of the trail against celebrity plaintiff Hulk Hogan. The company ran a publication of the plaintiff’s personal sex tape.

Not much else has been revealed, but it seems odd that Ziff Davis would be willing to purchase the company that is still in bad media spotlight.

Thanks, NPR. SOURCE Kotaku post.

A perfect opportunity to remove the shit stain that is Kotaku has been lost.

    • blackice85

Eh, if we’re lucky they still might clean house. If I were one of those ‘journalists’ there, I wouldn’t feel so reassured just yet.

    • j0eeyy_p

It’s a tabloid. It’s like Rupert Murdoch’s shitpapers here in the UK. They’ll find a way to survive, like the S*n surviving even following the phone hacking scandal and Hillsborough. I commend them for survival business, even though it’s bad business.

Still, if you want to work in the games industry covering niche games, you could do little worse than join Kotaku.

    • pre-alpha

They used to cover niche games, but they are as mainstream as they come now. As IGN covers mainstream games already, maybe Kotaku should focus a bit more on niche games?

    • j0eeyy_p

They’ve fucked over the niche gaming commmunity with theri bias against fanservice games. It will be very hard for them to earn back credibility with that market.

    • KissDisqus

Why would they clean house? The only reason gawker sites are popular is because of its notoriety. It’s retarded to think they would change any of that although they will probably reign in any potential lawsuit evoking posts like the hulk hogan sex tape in the future.

  • Daymon

Barf. I’d rather submerge myself in a bucket of hepatitises A through E then read anything on Kotaku.

  • Liamv2

    Darkest timeline.

  • Mr0303

Well, fuck you too IGN! Gawker’s downfall was a chance to remove that cancer from the gaming sphere, but you had to butt in!

  • Az

IGN isn’t nearly as bad as Kotaku or many other gaming journalist sites. Not by a long shot. This can only lead to good things, though admittedly, since it’s Kotaku we’re talking about, that’s about as low a bar as you can set.

    • bryoneill11

      IGN is right there…
      3.IGN
      2.Polygon
      1.Kotaku

      All terrible sites.

    • pre-alpha

Nope, I believe you can do far worse than IGN. And I believe Polygon is worse than Kotaku.

    • ROOCIS

Yeah I was gonna say, isn’t IGN ‘politically correct’ too? This might not be as ‘great’ as we were hoping…

    • Strazdas

IGN may be clueless when it comes to videogames, but they are far from the politicizing shitstains like Polygon or Kotaku. At least IGN focuses on games themselves.

    • bryoneill11

IGN far from politics? IGN went full SJW, where have you been all this time?

    • Strazdas

Nope. IGN stayed quite clear out of SJW stuff with exception of a single author writing a few editorials – way later than most of them did. You cant spell IGNorance without IGN, but you can spell Politics without them.

  • Infophile

Fun fact: I actually started reading Kotaku once I heard how much certain gamers seemed to hate it. It certainly lived up to it’s reputation, and I’m glad to see it’ll survive this.

    • azariosays

I’ve never actually been there. Members of staff do though and tell me all about it. That’s enough for me lol

    • Infophile

It definitely doesn’t agree with the viewpoints of most of the staff here on certain subjects, so I can’t say I’m surprised. And with how many gaming sites there are these days, there’s rarely much point for someone to watch more than one of the bigger sites… unless they want to make an effort to be exposed to competing views.

    • Daymon

I definitely think people should expose themselves to competing views. It challenges you, makes you look at your own views – I think it’s good.

As for Kotaku… I’ll admit my prejudice. I dislike them very, very much. I haven’t visited the site in years, not because of whatever viewpoint they may or may not have, but because when I was a contributor for this site a billion years ago, they wrote a clickbait article smearing this site and one of the contributors, and never bothered to correct it or update it (in spite of saying they would once they heard back from the site). It left an indelible, bad taste in my mouth.

    • KissDisqus

This isn’t about the article but oprainfall site. I’ve been experiencing a ton of problems this past month browsing this site. Seems like my browser just freezes or slows to a crawl every time I open an oprainfall page. Using firefox with my adblocker off. I can usually mitigate this by ending the flashplayerplugin in my task manager. It’s not like I have a toaster or anything. This problem doesn’t occur ever with other websites I’ve browsed.

    • azariosays

This shouldn’t happen! We are on a dedicated server. I’ll see what’s up. Thanks for the heads up

    • Strazdas

I experience this as well, though it goes away on its own after a while. something on your site is hanging the browser for ~15 seconds.

  • Dgnfly

Finally some good news for today.

  • KissDisqus

“Not much else has been revealed, but it seems odd that Ziff Davis would
be willing to purchase the company that is still in bad media spotlight.”
because it’s actually really popular? Sure you hear people talking trash about it and maybe they do publish questionable articles but their notoriety keeps drawing in new readers. Both the people who like their content and the ones who get angry about them can’t get enough of reading everything they publish.

I don’t go to their sites but people are delusional to think they wouldn’t have potential buyers lining up to get their grubby hands on gawker.

  • Didney Worl

Well, if IGN’s previous track record is any indication, Kotaku will probably shut down in a few years much like 1Up and many others IGN bought out. Either way, this doesn’t change the fact that Kotaku was able to get off scot-free after the collapse of Gawker and that makes me sad.

I need something to cheer me up. Anyone wanna watch some cartoons? Feel free to post any cartoons you like too. Let’s have some fun and share some laughs.

    • Mr0303

I’m in a mood for something a bit more violent:

    • Didney Worl

Man, I wish that got made into a series.

Alright, let’s mix things up with an animated music video.

  • Panpopo

The more things change, the more they stay the same.

  • MusouTensei

I will never visit IGN agaihahahahaha, like I ever did.

  • Doge

    >”Operation Rainfall”
Doesnt get much gayer than that
    BURN IT ALL

    • azariosays

      Pretty much!

  • ash

Another reason to stay away from IGN.

  • pre-alpha

I do believe that it is possible to improve Kotaku. You need to remove some people though and lay down firm rules. They don’t need to cover everything related to justice, just video games would do.

  • tBanzai

Was under the impression ZD BID 100 million. They haven’t bought it yet.

  • Strazdas

Ziff Davis is not the parent company of IGN. Both IGN and Ziff Davis are subsidiaries of j2 GLobal.
