The sci-fi anime OVA Fight! Iczer-One was released in 1985. The anime is based of the yuri manga of the same name where a Japanese school girl is chosen to fight an alien invasion.

To celebrate the 30th anniversary, Fight! Iczer-One was rebroadcast to TV, but was cheaply censored leaving most fans to question why they aired it to begin with.

Japan has a tendency to censor anime with steam, shadows, or even chibi faces, but the work done on Fight! Iczer-One can only be seen as lazy. Many scenes have been blacked out with bars covering almost the whole screen.

What do you think, should they have just not aired the OVA at all? Let us know in the comments below!

Geez, they didn’t even bother to use a mosaic filter.

  • Speed12345

inb4 people saying this isn’t censorship but just a “localization” for TV.

    • David S

This is still very much censorship, but on broadcast TV censorship is acceptable (though I wish it wasn’t done)

    • Paychi

This doesn’t really have anything to do with the problematic censorship that’s being argued about. This is justified when it’s plain nudity on broadcast TV. You have to be able to separate the two or people that defend the WRONG kind of censorship will use that against you.

  • tBanzai

Was this only aired on one channel? From my understanding this kind of thing really depends on the broadcaster.

For instance, broadcasts for the Jojo’s Bizarre Adventure anime were censored (nearly as badly as the above examples) on certain channels while aired completely unncensored on others.

  • Paychi

Yeah I wouldn’t have even aired it. I mean, they did what they had to do, but geez. If it’s a beloved piece of work, then why air it when it has to become this? Just silly.

  • Superr Mann

Even for Japan that’s crazy because they don’t normally censor anything.

    • TiamatNM

you’re not serious right? anime gets censored all the time on Japanese TV

    • Speed12345

They do. Porn is censored by default, for example.

    • Superr Mann

Oh yeah. I always wondered why they did that but some is not scrambled for some reason

  • David S

While I don’t usually mind censorship on broadcast TV, this is intensely lazy looking.

Thing is, this is so excessive I almost have to think it was intentional. Like some marketer came up with the idea “hey, lets make the censorship so bad that people will run out to buy a physical copy just to find out what was hidden” At least I”m hoping that’s it, since the alternative…

  • Sylveria Shini

Why even air it. This looks atrocious.

  • WaterBlad64

Seriously, why would they even show this on Japanese TV to begin with? This is Terra Formars levels of bad!
