Pikmin 4, a game we only maybe, conceptually knew existed, is not only real, but it might just be near completion. In an interview with Eurogamer, interim president of Nintendo Shigeru Miyamoto said “it’s actually very close to completion.” Nintendo would later confirme the existence of Pikmin 4, but nothing about its state in development. “We can confirm that Pikmin 4 is in development,” says Nintendo, “but that is all we can confirm at present.”
This is the first we have heard about anything pertaining to Pikmin 4. It’s not unheard of for Nintendo to reveal the existence of a game until late in its development cycle. Kirby’s Epic Yarn was debuted in the E3 of 2010 before being release that October in Japan and North America, a mere four months difference.
Nintendo’s response seems to hint at a kind of damage control. They could not take back the reveal of Pikmin 4’s existence, but they can try to control the messaging on the game’s release date.
The Pikmin series is Nintendo’s take on a real time strategy game. Although it features combat, the real focus of the game is exploration and gathering resources. The series’s last outing was Pikmin 3 on the Wii U in 2013.
No platforms have been announced for Pikmin 4 nor any release windows.
