This week’s VGM of the Week comes from one of the greatest classics, Chrono Trigger. The particular track reminds us of one of the best summer traditions, the fair. Summer in the United States is also the season of various state fairs, especially across the Midwest. My home state began its State Fair last week with other states having their fairs either in the upcoming weeks or during the previous few weeks. The Guardia Millennial Fair is not only an excellent beginning area in Chrono Trigger, it also reminds us of the fun to be had at the fair.
The Millennial Fair is held to celebrate the founding of the Guardia Kingdom 1,000 years prior to the beginning of the game. The theme plays as soon as Crono enters the fair with his pocket change given to him by his mother. The tune itself is filled with pomp and circumstance as a variety of instruments play in the background including drums, trumpets, and flutes. It lets you know this is a fun, relaxing place. The atmosphere is upbeat with a festival flair. Within the Fair are various shops with equipment and souvenirs, a race, a robot to beat up, a demonstration stage, and, of course, a prehistoric dance team. Depending on the area Crono is in, the music will change. For example, the Prehistoric area of the fair will change to this tune:
The Guardia Millennial Fair’s music is welcoming and inviting to both its guests and to the players guiding Crono to the gates. The music is upbeat with plenty of drums, trumpets, and other instruments. The Millennial Fair’s theme reminds us to have a good old time at the fair, to explore all the festivities, and it sets the stage for the epic tale of Chrono Trigger.
