Konami released a new trailer for Metal Gear Solid V: The Phantom Pain in preparation for E3 2015. It is a cinematic trailer meant to offer many teases of the game’s plot. The finished product is just under six minutes long and offers a substantive look at the story to come within the next Metal Gear Solid entry. It is directed by Hideo Kojima, and the trailer showcases his characteristic dramatic artistry. It is a raw trailer, with some blood, and designed to be highly evocative. Kojima has been eager to show off the trailer, and his Twitter account definitely shows this.
The story of The Phantom Pain is focused on the tragedy of Venom Snake as he becomes Big Boss, the antagonist of the first two Metal Gear games. It also revolves around the power of language and words, perhaps going beyond the theme of “memes” that was explored in Metal Gear Solid 2: Sons of Liberty. While memes involve the repetition and propagation of ideas, this trailer seems to hint at restricting the ability to communicate, with war being used as a tool to unite people. At the end, the trailer mentions the idea of “Les Enfants Terribles”, a project that would produce Solid Snake, Liquid Snake, and Solidus Snake. The events in this game are part of what will motivate him to pursue his vision for the world, collectively referred to as “Outer Heaven.”
The trailer also announces at its conclusion that Metal Gear Solid V: The Phantom Pain is scheduled for release on September 1st, 2015. Watch the trailer below!
